World Voyage Planner - Amazed

Bill and I are currently circumnavigating aboard BeBe and own most of Jimmy Cornell's books. Our copies of "World Cruising Routes" and World Cruising Destinations" are bookmarked, earmarked, pencil-marked, and coffee stained. We have used them extensively on our circumnavigation.

In the past few months Jimmy's new books have become available. We received "Cornell's Ocean Atlas: Pilot Charts for All Oceans of the World" (Ocean Atlas) several months ago and just received "World Voyage Planner." I opened "World Voyage Planner" and closed it 5 hours later. I can sum up my opinion in one word, amazed!

Our first two books by Jimmy were priceless, filled with the best ocean sailing and circumnavigating information available...every circumnavigator I know agrees with this. His latest book, "World Voyage Planner," is jam-packed full of the best information available today...and we all know how information has improved in the past 10 years! "World Voyage Planner" is well organized AND it is very easy to use...I could not believe it. Pick an Ocean, then a departure point...go to the contents pages, then flip to the page and there it is. Jimmy adds facts about the weather, wind, currents and ports all over the world. In fact every route in every ocean and at every season is available in this book.

The "World Voyage Planner" is full of planning charts, pilot charts, tables and really great photographs. Additionally, Jimmy included comments and personal short stories from several well known experts. You will find these added to the pages of the destinations.

If you are going to sail any of the world's oceans or circumnavigate the world, the first book you should own is "World Voyage Planner" and the second one is "Cornell's Ocean Atlas: Pilot Charts for All Oceans of the World."

Great Book for Planning a Voyage

If you're dreaming about a voyage or just an armchair sailor this book is loaded with the information you need for planning the correct time to begin that voyage. This book not only opens your eyes on how to plan the trip but what alternatives you have to consider before you cast off the lines and point your boat off shore. kids ask for these skits every day

I teach 6th-8th grade ESL. These skits are perfect for my classes, because they are short (less than ten minutes), very funny, active, and not too difficult. They cover lots of basic topics and vocabulary, like clothing, weather, food, etc. My kids ask for them every day, but I save them as treats for the end of each week. That way, the book lasts the entire school year. It also makes teaching fun for me!

I think the book is great for English learners,especially beginners.My Chinese English learners learn best when role plays are done in class.These small skits are very easy for them to understand and enjoy!The only problem is that I bought the e-book version and I can not print out any of the skits to do in class!There should be an option for this type of book on it being printable or not!

These skits are humorous and always have unexpected endings. They make learning English fun. I also use them for native speakers of English who might need some additional help or are just bored with textbooks. As a teacher, I enjoy reading them myself.

Not sure who this book is meant to be for

I would never say I didn't like this book, but I can't honestly say I liked it, either. It appeared to be half the author speaking to himself, with some stories thrown in. There's some vague hostility towards academics in the beginning that soured me on the rest of the book. I'm not an academic, but they have their place too and opening the book with such a huge chip on his shoulder was not terribly charming.

In addition, I have no idea who the book was meant for - it's too adult for young people and too sophomoric for adults.

There are better sources for information on Japanese religion, traditions and gods.

About the Author
Irvin D. Yalom, M.D., is professor emeritus of psychiatry at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He was the recipient of the 1974 Edward Strecker Award and the 1979 Foundation's Fund Prize in Psychiatry. The "master" speaks to grasshopper...

Yalom has vast knowledge and experience with group therapy, and in this book he imparts it to neophyte counselors in a logical and detailed format. He carefully explains the therapeutic value of a group, the factors necessary to facilitate change, and the role of the therapist. He emphasizes the here-and-now focus, and how group members create a social microcosm of their life within the therapy group. Yalom advises on practical matters, like the selection of clients and the creation of the group. He then carefully explores the stages that groups move through, and some problem members that one could encounter.

The drawbacks of this volume include the length - it is excessively long (they could cut chapter 9) due to the verbosity of the author. I had to look up several words and phrases that I was unfamiliar with, and I have to admit, some pages bored me. Nevertheless, for a text, this is a great book. I read every page, to the end, even the unassigned chapters. I'll keep this in my library for reference, and I hope to be able to refer to it repeatedly.

Yalom rocks!!

I love reading Yalom. He makes group therapy concepts flow like a river. I would give this as a gift to every student of psychology, psychiatry, nursing, social work, that I know. Not having won the lottery, I am thrilled to have it in my own library.

authentic and proficient towards human health

Cristal clear, authentic, proficient, interpersonal aproach.I read the book 10 - 12 hours per day, almost without pause.Useful in all paradigms. The therapeutic factors are : instilation of hope,universality, imparting information, altruism, corrective recapitulation of thr primary family group. The comparative value of the clients'and therapists' views are very usefully presented.Working in the Here-and-Now, positive and negative catharsis ( with corrective interpretation),and the liaison with other books of professor Yalom, are only a few ideas of this great book. I recommand it for student, teachers and everyone interested in personal development.

It also includes many advances in methodologies, including liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and developments and updates on the mathematical methods used to exploit pigment information and extract the composition of phytoplankton communities. The book is invaluable primarily as a reference for students, researchers and professionals in aquatic science, biogeochemistry and remote sensing.

About the Author
Suzanne Roy is a Professor of Biological Oceanography at the Institut des Sciences de la Mer of the Université du Québec ... Rimouski (Canada) and a member of Québec-Ocean. Over the last 20 years, Professor Roy has developed an expertise in the ecology and physiology of marine and estuarine phytoplankton, focusing on various aspects such as population dynamics of harmful algae, environmental impacts of aquaculture and ozone-related ultraviolet radiation effects. She also runs an analytical laboratory for the HPLC determination of algal pigments and UV-screening compounds. Her current research interests include the combined influence of climate warming and enhanced UV on phytoplankton communities, photoprotection and cell mortality in Arctic phytoplankton, and the transport of non-indigenous dinoflagellates in ships' ballast tanks. Several of these projects are part of Canada's major NSERC Research Networks such as CAISN and CFL. Professor Roy is a member of the Scientific Committee for the international Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) programme.

Einar Skarstad Egeland is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Bodø University College, Norway. He has a broad experience in organic chemical analysis (chromatography and spectroscopy). He is an internationally recognised scientist on carotenoid analysis from natural sources (mostly prasinophyte algae, but also other algal classes). Currently, he is involved in several cross-disciplinary research projects related to marine ecology, aquaculture and seafood quality. He is an active member of the Marine Ecology Group at Bodø University College.

Carole Llewellyn is a microbial biogeochemist at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK. She has experience in phytoplankton pigments and UV absorbing compounds spanning over 20 years. Her research interests are focused on understanding the role of phytoplankton in the ocean and more specifically on microbial and food web dynamics, microbial biodiversity, community composition and photophysiology. At an applied level, her research contributes to eutrophication and pollution studies and links with satellite remote-sensing and bio-optics. More recently she has used her knowledge on algae and pigments to contribute to the rapidly growing area of algal biotechnology.

Geir Johnsen is a Professor of Marine Biology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and an Adjunct Professor in marine bio-optics at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). His major interests are the use of bio-optical methods in taxonomy, ecology and physiology of micro- and macroalgae. His main focus in the last 20 years has been on photosynthesis, light harvesting and utilization in algae and marine invertebrates with photosynthetic endosymbionts. Current interests include new approaches in in situ and remote sensing techniques for monitoring and mapping of planktonic and benthic organisms in the water surface, water column and sea floor.

First published in 1985 with the title Dictionary of Mysticism and the Occult , this book is a true dictionary, not an encyclopedia. It contains short, single-paragraph definitions or synopses of various subjects in the areas of mythology, parapsychology, the occult, and mysticism. The book contains many short biographical sketches, but while the subject entries are uniformly accurate and well done, the same cannot be said for all the biographies. In some cases birth and death dates are lacking. Some (e.g., Eric Digwall, D.D. Home) contain careless errors that could easily have been prevented by simple checking. The book as a whole, however, makes up for these deficiencies by supplying a source of information that will not readily be found elsewhere. For subject collections.
