A Perfect Preschool Workbook!

I am currently home schooling my first grader and though my daughter wanted to join us she was often left out and frustrated with our challenging curriculum. I bought this book for my 4 year old daughter so she could do "school" too and it's a perfect combination of fun school work that will teach her the basics before she reaches kindergarten. We are enjoying it each day together!

Fine, but needs instructions.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great book - my only beef is that there are no "instructions" on how to navigate and complete the book, or which sections to do in sequence. You have to purchase another one of their books in order to know how to properly utilize these lessons. So not stoked about that part. I still use it, and just jump around page to page, hoping that I'm doing things in a logical way.

This was the first actual "workbook" we started with our daughter when she turned three. The book is very simple and not too difficult for her age. She can follow the instructions easily and enjoys working in it. Overall a good choice for the early preschooler.

I moved to New York City a year ago, but didn't have this book. How I wish I did...
This city is a lot of fun, but is also demanding in many ways. Understanding your rights as a tenant is one of those "know it or suffer the consequences" issues every NYC renter faces.
I found this book to be a great resource, even with the recent modifications in state and city laws. It is well laid out and explains the sometimes dry issues of tenants' rights in a very readable manner. Unlike several of the other tenants' rights books out there, this book had a well constructed index that brought me straight to the answers I was seeking.
Be proactive, buy this book!

A great find!!!

This book is amazing! When I first started renting in NYC I was really intimidated and let landlords walk all over me but this book has helped me to do a 360. Now that I know what my rights are, I don't hesitate to confront my landlord about things like repairs. A couple of months ago I even used this book as a guide to subletting my place. I thought that that was going to be a huge ordeal but this book made it so easy! So if you're a NY renter, do yourself a favor and buy this book! Don't let the greedy landlords take advantage of you anymore!

An unbiased view by a great scholar

Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of Humanities at Yale University is always an interesting read, regardless of his subject. He is among the best read individuals in America. It is pleasant to read such a work about the coming forth of the religions spawned by the great American experiment. In this book he documents his own bias as a cultural non-believing Jew which does not seem to color his opinion of the Christian faiths he observes. His is an interesting critique of the rise of these American religions including: Pentecostalism, Mormonism, Seventh-day Adventism, Christian Science, Jehovah's Witnesses, Southern Baptism and Fundamentalism, and African American spirituality.

He seems to treat each fairly and justly as one from a background in literature and humanities, one with such an intellect and critical mind would do. History must judge each of these religious movements without the jaundiced eye of one who wants desperately to defend or equally angrily to defame the groups about which they write. Thus, this work is refreshing in the fairness with which it treats each. No religious movement is without its problems. Their founders and promulgators are always men and women who, even if they claim to be representing Deity or the Son of Deity, are mere mortals like ourselves. They are subject to foibles as well as we and few claimed to be perfect.

Among the numerous books that seek to defame many of these religions, particularly the Mormons or LDS, it is refreshing to see a fair appraisal by one who has nothing to gain nor to lose. Objectivity is something that is often missing in books such as this. Professor Bloom deserves praise for looking at an interesting, but not an easy subject to critique with an unbiased eye.

This is a very good book for anyone to read who is looking for a survey of American religions and who just wants the facts without coloration. In this area of human endeavor, one should be able to see the facts and judge for one's self, not have the author judge for them. Most of us like to make up our own minds and not have something thrust down our throats by someone with an agenda or an axe to grind. This is such a book.

I recommend this book highly as a very interesting and generally factual book. As with many of his other books, Professor Bloom is to be commended.

A classic

I have read and re-read this for years, starting with the first edition, and I have bought and loaned more copies than I can count. Many of them I didn't get back but I always figured that was in a good cause. Anyone who wants to understand the present-day American religious scene should have this basic understanding of the history of how America changed religions which came from Europe and how America invented new ones. When the Jehovah's Witnesses knock at your door, when a devout Mormon runs for President, and when a Southern Baptist preacher waves the bible at you but doesn't seem to know it very well - do you wonder where all that came from? Well, read this book.

Insightful but exhausting

I once watched Sarah Palin say this at a campaign rally: "What this country needs is more divine intervention in the White House." I think she meant "inspiration." Still, the crowd went wild with applause. Her quote illustrates one of the theories of Bloom's book, that for many Americans the only politics they know is religion. God would be right there with Palin in the White House as her chief adviser. And her fans loved it.

Bloom makes his case that this new American Religion is an entirely personal experience of God(or Jesus), uncontaminated by scripture or exegesis. It claims to be a submission of will; in effect it is an apotheosis of the self. Its method is to invite God into one's own mind. Enthusiasm, that is Happiness and Joy, are the payoff.

But is it Christian? No, says Bloom. It is Gnosticism, or something very like it. Once engulfed by the Spirit, one's mind realizes that this material world is the present battle ground of Good vs. Evil. And that very soon the Apocalypse shall herald an End of Days. Yeah for the Apocalypse! Yippee!

Clearly Bloom intends the book to be a warning. America is the most religious of Western Nations. It is the most powerful on earth. And it has forged a religion of narcissism and self-righteousness that claims that this country is the new Jerusalem. And out there, were the Evil lurks, it will battle God's enemy. Meanwhile, out there, others are thinking the exact same thing about us.

I cannot fault the premise of the book, which is thoughtfully constructed. There is more to be found in it than criticism. True believers should stay away, nonetheless. While Bloom is careful to express his admiration, it can at times seem feint praise.

Given Bloom's profession, literary criticism, I thought he might prove to be a more compelling storyteller. Sadly, the book reads as one written by a professor. That explains the four-star rating.

Fun, lovable read!

Let me just start by saying I appreciate that the author was kind enough to point out what could have been a flaw in her story, or at least a point for people to complain about. Right up front, she tells you that the way things happen in the book is not normal, but were sped up for the sake of the story. I like that s***. So I have literally no reason to complain about how unrealistic certain things are, since she warned me and I chose to continue. Thanks for keeping it real, Ella.

The characters were pretty great. Olive and Jason and Olives BFF Lucy... they were all just great. I love the solid friendship that Olive and Lucy had, and I love Lucy's need for comfy boobs to rest on. Jason was on the verge of perfect, without being that completely overbearing jealous guy that I find so often in these types of books. While a bit of mutual jealousy is fine, it is just so often over the top in books lately! There is a limit where it stops being attractive, and he did not exceed that.

This book, like many others, is not perfect. But I laughed, I cried a smidgen, and I definitely inhaled this in one sitting. It was so easy to get into and I just couldn't stop. To love Jason Thorn will give all kinds of lovely feels. It put a huge smile on my face.

My reason for going with 4.5 stars instead of 5 is just because:
1) Sometimes I get tired of a nickname for someone being repeated so. many. times.

and....

2) At some point, dirty talk during sex starts to feel like a cheese fest for me. Not that this book wasn't steamy and sexy, I just get easily cheesed out by these things sometimes. Plenty of people will enjoy every word of it. It is just a personal thing for me!!

I DEFINITELY plan to read the next book, and the short books from within this book (I love that the author did that, by the way!).

Jason Thorn is everything I look for in a book boyfriend. He's a perfect combination mixed together in one devastatingly handsome package. He's equal parts, arrogant and cocky, sweet and caring.

"I kissed the edges of her mouth where she hid those secret smiles, the ones she saved for when she was writing on her laptop, lost in a different world she was creating from the start, brick by brick. I wanted to own those secret smiles just as much I wanted to own her beautiful heart. I wanted to be the reason for their existence"

Olive Taylor is everything I look for in a heroine. Sweet, adorable and a wee bit dorky. She's totally relatable which makes her perfect for this genre.

"When I lifted my head up, he was staring down at me-right into my eyes. By then I was the perfect example of one of those 'My body is ready' Gifs."

To Love Jason Thorn is everything I look for in a favourite book. A perfect combination of the bad boy vs the good girl. I absolutely adored this book, it ticked all the right boxes for me.

"Then my lips were on hers, and her lips were on mine. We kissed long enough to cover years. In front of everyone, her lips became mine and I took her breath for myself, because I needed it more then she did."

The storyline was a wee bit of famous actor thrown in with my favourite type of Romance, the heroine and the brothers best friend. I've discovered that a lot of my favourite books seem to be this genre and it's because it always works.

"My heart ached with love for a little girl who in some ways had always belonged to me"

Olive grew up idolising her big brothers best friend, Jason, she's been in love with him since she was 7 years old. But Jason broke her heart twice and now lives a separate life to the Taylor family. A chance encounter at a movie executives office changes Olive and Jason's lives completely. A love that burned for so long grows brighter and a love that was completely platonic grows into so much more. This story follows Olive and Jason through a friendship that develops into friends with marriage and then so much more. I adored the way this story was written and I loved the pet names that Jason gave Olive, I highlighted a huge portion of this book, the steamy quotes, the love quotes and the downright hilarious quotes.

"That thing that resides in your chest? Took wings and flew away. The other thing that was in my skull? Turned to complete mush."

Ella Maise creates characters and a storyline that develop all on there own. The development of the story was smooth and flowed perfectly from chapter to chapter. The secondary characters were certainly a treat to read about as well. Everyone's needs a friend like Lucy!

"If it happens, don't freak out, Olive. You're a calm waterfall, a purring cat."

I would recommend this to anyone who dreams of one day marrying Zac Efron or who adores the friends to lovers genre. A great read with a whole lot of humour.

"She was seeing me, and maybe for the first time, I was seeing her too. Her voice called to me as much as her eyes did, but then she hid those beautiful eyes from me, and I found myself crossing the room to get to her."

Minor editing issues throughout but nothing too major

I am always a little skeptical the first time I read a book by a new author but this one passed with flying colors. I loved the characters, the plot line and the banter between all the characters was great. I found myself laughing out loud a few times.

Olive has been in love with Jason since she met him when she was 8. They basically spend the next 8 years growing up in the same house until tragedy strikes and Jason has to move away. Right before he moves away though he unknowingly breaks her heart.

Fast forward 15ish (can't remember the exact amount) years and all the sudden their paths cross again in the most unexpected of ways

Jason is now a leading actor in Hollywood who can't stop making bad choices. Olive is the innocent author with a book being made into a movie. In order to improve his image his publicist is trying to convince him to get married. (Love isn't a requirement in Hollywood apparently) After looking at what feels like a million head shots the lightbulb goes off and everyone agrees Jason doesn't need a fake actress wife...he needs Olive. With their background no one would question their fast love affair.

But what happens when lines blur and real feelings are involved? And what happens when a jealous friend starts causing trouble in the most serious of ways.

Great book, had my attention the whole time. Worth reading and I have already bought the second book in the series because Lucy is hysterical!!!

Excellent work.

I found this text to be highly readable as well as highly informative, which is a rare combination sometimes. This would appeal both to historians and theologians alike. Church history is an underappreciated subject by both fields in my opinion, as history is a driving force to the tradition that becomes religious practice, and religion is a driving force behind the history of nations and peoples. I still have this book on my shelves and refresh my memory regularly with it.

great intro book

This is a primary course text for a church history class I am currently taking. Lynch's explanations of different major movements and figures are clear, articulate, and informed. This book isn't an exciting read, but is one of the most informative and least trying upper-level history course books I've read.

Considering the range and breadth of the topic, Lynch does not do justice to many medieval religious topics, but with this book he provides a good starting point for further research.

Joseph H. Lynch is a Professor of History at Ohio State University and is also the author of the following books: Early Christianity: A Brief History, Christianizing Kinship: Ritual Sponsorship in Anglo-Saxon England, and many other books.Through the reading of his book, The Medieval Church, Lynch's passion to teach the history of Christianity is evident in his writings. Lynch's books provide readers an in depth, yet readable glance into the history of Christianity. He provides his readers a captivating viewpoint of the history that took place and changed the world and the growth of the church. The importance of studying the history of Christianity is illustrated through Lynch's books that display the necessity to learn about our church history in order to understand where we are today.

The book, The Medieval Church, provides readers a chronological and fairly detailed look into the medieval era of the history of Christianity. Lynch does an excellent job in setting out the facts without providing a stale encyclopedia historical outlook, but uses a language that entices the readers interest by bringing to life the realities of the history of Christianity. From Ancient Christianity to the eve of the Reformation, Lynch descriptively introduces his readers to what the world was like for the church during this era. Lynch divides his book up into twenty sections that are divided by time periods and also important events that took place. This book provides good historical facts with a timeline that guides readers through the history of the church and at the same time introduces readers to the various movements that took place that affected the overall growth of the church. Lynch does an outstanding job in exploring all areas of the medieval era including monasticism, missions, growth of the schools, details in regards to the church structure, and illustrates details of the challenges faced by the church from opposition outside of the church and even within the church.

As the medieval era is the precursor for the reformation, Lynch does a beautiful job in building up the climax of this era towards the eve of the Reformation era. The use of clear and concise language throughout the book grasps readers attention and sustains their interest in learning about the medieval era. When reading this book, readers should have some background of the early church history to completely understand the language and conflicts that arise during this time period. Lynch provides his readers in the preface a list of books to reference while reading this book as it uses language and refers to events that the reader should have some knowledge of. Taking this into consideration, The Medieval Church: A Brief History is a book that should not be read individually. As this book is historically built upon other historical facts about the history of the church, it is necessary for readers to have basic knowledge of early Christian history.

For myself, a student of the study of the history of Christianity, Lynch's book has provided me a comprehensive and chronological study of the development of the church including details of contributors to the growth of the church, the events that took place, and the events that foreshadowed the events to come.

Lynch's book The Medieval Church is a book that would be suitable for students who already have a basic background on the early church history. As a seminary student, I would highly recommend this book to those in seminary. This book should not be read on its own, but should be read with prior and post historical information from the medieval church era.

Overall, Joseph H. Lynch presents a book that is a great historical book that provides a clear and concise outlook on the medieval church era and provides readers a diverse look at the all aspects that contributed to the development and growth of the church towards the eve of Reformation.

Very useful DBA book !

I have been an Oracle DBA for the last 7 years and have used Oracle7, Oracle8 extensively. I usually buy quite a few Oracle books for my reference. I must say that this Oracle8i DBA Book is very well written and has a totally new format, the Questions and answers which guides the reader on how to implement the feature. I must say that the scripts that are available for download are very accurate and useful. The replication topic was excellent and I was able to replicate my two database fairly quickly. Partitioning has been covered in detail and with good examples. If you want to implement standby database then this is the book, it provides A to Z on it with examples. This book is much better than any other Oracle Press book on Database Administration. I have already used this book on a number of occasions and I think the author has done a good job in providing an easy-to-read book. I highly recomend this for intermediate to advanced DBA. - Good luck !

Most useful DBA book I've read so far

As an Oracle Instructor and DBA I've had the opportunity to review numerous Oracle texts for DBA's and have to say I've been quite disappointed with most of them. Mr. Yuhanna's book however is an exception. Out of the many DBA texts I have on my shelf this is the one I goto most frequently. Unlike other texts which spend excessive amounts of time covering uncommonly used features and little to no time covering commonly used features this books covers almost all the basics in a hands on approach. The book is setup in a step by step how-to format. Although it doesn't discuss concepts much that is not its purpose and the best concepts book is the Oracle Documentation anyway. I've have yet to see a good how-to DBA book until I came across this one. As a consultant/instructor I recommend it quite frequently.

Practical Oracle DBA Book !

I found this book to be very useful for DBA related tasks. It has covered topics such as Tablespace administration, Parallel execution very well. It uses a FAQ approach, where a question is answered using scripts and examples. Also I liked the Standby Database topic, it has step-by-step implementation, including how to recover upto the last commited transaction! I also found the topic on Advanced Oracle Replication to be very useful and practical. I would highly recommend it to any DBA. It has quite a few scripts and examples that makes it interesting to read. Also I have so far not found any script errors, the author has really done a good job.

Elspeth Berry is Reader in Law at Nottingham Trent University where she teaches EU law, human rights, partnership and LLP Law and the conflict of laws. Elspeth has written widely on EU law and human rights, including a textbook co-authored with Sylvia Hargreaves, as well as on partnership and LLP law.

Matthew J. Homewood is Principal Lecturer and module leader for EU Law at Nottingham Trent University. Matthew is also the co-author of the third edition of EU Law Concentrate (Oxford University Press, 2014).

Barbara Bogusz is Lecturer in Law at the University of Leicester where she teaches EU law. Barbara also teaches land law and intellectual property law and is the author of Complete Land Law (Oxford University Press, 2015).
