David Pye, who died in 1993, was an architect, industrial designer andcraftsman. For many years he was also Professor of FurnitureDesign at the Royal College of Art, London. He is also the authorof Ships and The Nature and Aesthetics of Design.

Workmanship as a personal statement

Pye knows that understanding comes in two steps. The second presents the new knowledge, but the first step clears out old fallacies to make way for the new facts. To do that, he starts this book by thoroughly confusing the question of what is hand work, and what is done by machine. Once that is shown irrelevant, he starts on the points that truly matter.

First, the terms "craft" and "craftsmanship" have been co-opted and corrupted by so many authors that, with regret, he abandons them. Instead, he defines new terms. The first opposed pairs are the workmanship of risk and the workmanship of certainty. Certainty is knowledge that a piece of work will surely complete in the way intended, as is typical in mass manufacture. Risk is the chance that any workpiece could be damaged or destroyed at any step in its handling - a chisel could clip, a hammer could damage the surface, a saw cut might be placed wrong. It doesn't matter whether the tool is a simple hammer or a complex milling machine: either a reliable process or a fallible workman defines the result.

Pye's second distinction is "regulated" versus "free" or "rough" fabrication. Regulated work meets fine tolerances, has precise geometries and surfaces. Free work allows the workman to vary the workpiece somewhat. Free workmanship allows expressive notes, perhaps tool textures or subtle changes of shape. Rough workmanship goes farther. A wood fence, for example, may be straight and strong enough, with coarse shapes, knots in the wood, and even some checking.

None of that distinguishes good workmanship from bad. Good workmanship carries out the practical and esthetic intent of a design, or improves on them. Bad workmanship detracts from the design's usefulness or beauty. In something like a rural stone wall, excessively regulated work might even be considered bad, if it's the one exact geometry in a generally relaxed environment. A rough-hewn bench may be just as good, in its way, as an inlaid Victorian table.

Pye ends this wise book by reviewing what Ruskin and Morris had to say about craft. I won't repeat his arguments, but he points out the reams of nonsense they interleaved between pages of meaningful thought. As with everything he analyzes, he carefully highlights the worthwhile, and elegantly tears up the romantic silliness.

Pye is truly dedicated to workmanship and to dedicated workmen (and, implicitly, women). I recommend this book to anyone who creates anything, whether professionally or for the personal reward in the act of making.

Excellent book for anyone interested in craftmanship and the aesthetics of everyday objects

This book was recommended as a supplemental reading in a pottery course. The author of the book primarily worked with wood and there are many examples of furniture and turned wood objects in the book.

The real value of this book is in articulating the aesthetics of hand made objects and what makes them special and wonderful as compared to machine made objects. It's an excellent read for anyone who makes things with their hands.

Lucid, practical, a classic

I love this book. Pye, in concise and often beautiful language, defines the idea of workmanship as he sees it -- its history, its implications, how it might develop. He gives interesting commentary on the Arts & Crafts movement vis-a-vis Ruskin and Morris as well.
Pye really is a master of the old school, and I would encourage anyone to buy this book for both its own ideas and for a look at a wonderful mind. A great companion to Krenov.

Eric J. Cesal holds master's degrees in business administration, construction management, and architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. He is now living in Port-au-Prince, managing and coordinating Architecture for Humanity's design and reconstruction initiatives in Haiti.

Best book about the architecture profession, ever. Probably.

I just finished reading Down Detour Road by Eric J. Cesal, literally moments ago. I can say, without trepidation, that this was the single best book I've ever read about the profession of architecture. I had no doubt that I would like it from the start.

I came across the book completely by chance. I was wandering the shelves at the local national-chain bookstore and, as I often do, came upon their steadily shrinking selection of architecture books. Having perused most of the titles in the past, it didn't take me long to spot the handful of new titles that had arrived since my last visit. Among them was Down Detour Road. I spent a few minutes reading the introduction. Here in my hand was this book that immediately struck me. The author was writing about issues that plague my mind. It makes sense. He graduated from architecture school five months before I did, so he was stumbling through the same economic minefield as I was. He was also older than the average architecture graduate, much like myself. I felt I had found a kindred spirit. It seemed the book held a world of possibility. So naturally I put it back on the shelf and walked away. I don't have a job, nor the steady supply of money that comes from such an endeavor. So I waited until I got home to order it online.

The book does a wonderful job of explaining how the economic crisis happened, how it affected architecture, and how it highlighted a litany of problems that already existed. From the rubble it works to help refocus what it is to be an architect and how we might empower the role of architecture for the good of the profession. With a wonderful combination of comedy, tragedy, and personal anecdote, this book gives a direction for the role of architecture without suggesting it's form or aesthetics. It is a manifesto for the service that is architecture rather than the product often called architecture. This may be a bold statement, but I think any and every architect and architecture student out there should read this book. Read this book, you won't be sorry.

Every Architect Should Read This Book

Every architect should be required to read this book; when our industry recovers (and it will although not next year but by the mid-decade), things will be different - very different. This book examines why things must change if the profession of architecture is to survive. We can only do this by offering value and worth to our clients, our communities and society as a whole; then and only then will we be compensated and rewarded for our dedication, efforts, redeeming qualities, abilities, training and talents.

Fresh, Wise, Timely

As the cigarette smoke, the stench of stale champagne and perfume clears and all those monographs of parametrically generated pavillions in the form of flying Prada handbags slowly find their ways into the bargin bins at Barnes and Noble, this wise little book comes onto architecture's scene with the freshness of the young girl's face at the end of Fellini's La Dolce Vita. Will the profession wake from its casting-show-torper and narcissistic navel-gazing long enough to take notice? Let's hope so! Cesal's message? Like Forster's: "Only connect!" He suggests, in a provocative 225 pages, how we as a profession might begin again to become relevant in that significant part of the world that takes place outside of our own glossy magazines. Recommended reading for my studio students this year.

About the Author
Trent Mongero has been coaching high school baseball for more than 20 years, shattering 22 school records in the past three seasons at North Hall High School. In 1995, ESPN broadcast his team's defeat of the USA Today number-one-ranked team in the country. He has also developed 12 players who have signed professional contracts and more than 85 who have gone on to play college baseball. A former professional baseball player and 1989 conference “Player of the Year,” Mongero played Division I baseball at UNC-Wilmington, where he was voted onto the “All-Decade” team. He has also instructed at top college camps, including the University of South Carolina (2010 and 2011 Division I National Champions). A resident of Gainesville, GA, he is currently an associate scout for the Boston Red Sox and recently launched the Winning Baseball Academy, which brings elite baseball instruction to anyone, anywhere in the US.

I Can Teach Baseball now!!! Thanks Winning Baseball

When my son was starting baseball, I bought every baseball resourse available on the market to help me help my son. I was tired of hearing that moms could not effectively coach their sons in baseball. The thing was, I did not want to coach him, I wanted to prepare him for what he needed in games and practice. To improve. Well every book left me with my eyes crossed. That is until I purchased the fist book in the "Winning Baseball" series by Trent Mongero. His book, DVD, and photos helpd me gain the confidence I needed to teach skills and drills to my son and his friends. Because of Winning Baseball my son has made his teams, played every game, and made his all-star team the past two years.

Well my son is now 12 and we just bought "Winning Baseball-Intermediate to College". I love it! Great as I expected it would be! I'm now ready to give him things he won't even get from his travel ball coaches. To all you moms out there, if you get this book, you will be showing up all the dads! But don't tell them our secret. Can't wait for book 3 in the series. We are headed to the cages now to work on some hitting drills.

I am only giving this book five stars because I cannot give it ten or more.

This is by far the best baseball instructional book series I have read, and I own an entire 6-foot book case of them as well as having borrowed countless from the library.

It figures that a UNCW Seahawk would be the one behind such a quality product. The quality of their college baseball program far surpasses their budget or the size of the college, as they show time and again that they can stand toe-to-toe with the Texases and LSUs of the world.

I bought the book not realizing that Trent Mongero was the author, but only buying it based off the positive reviews. When I opened the book and watched the DVDs, I was shocked to be looking at Brooks Field, UNCW's ballpark, my alma mater, but also to be looking at Coach Trent, one of the best coaches (along with Coach Mark Scalf) I ever had. He was one of my coaches year after year at UNCW baseball camps, which I attended every year from the time I was 8 until I was 16. Those camps improved my game and my knowledge and my ability to explain the small nuances and subtleties of baseball and its mechanics exponentially. Every year I exited the summer camps as at least 3 times the player I was when I entered.

What Coach Mongero shares with you in these books is a comprehensive view what is shared with gifted and fortunate young ballplayers at the world's greatest camps. You will not find a better baseball coach. You will not find a book series that explains so much as this one. You will not find a book series that explains so well as this one. Anyone blessed enough to have had Coach Mongero as one of their coaches can tell you the difference between him and almost any other coach you will encounter in life. And anyone who has had him can tell you that he poured his all into this book series and he nailed it. God bless you, Coach Mongero. The game needs more like you.

Not only will this make you a better player... if you truly absorb this info and understand it and share it, it will make you a superior coach. You will understand things seemingly nobody else understands. Only one word of warning, and I do mean this in a serious way: if you coach with the tools and info Coach Mongero shares with you in this book, other coaches will be intimidated and spiteful of your skills and knowledge. You'll be exposing their lack of knowledge, and they may not take kindly to that. Good ole' boy networks that unfortunately exist in some levels of the game and in some regions may make you their target. Don't let that discourage you from improving the state of the game, which Coach Mongero is helping to do by publishing this book. Be warned, but also be grateful that this resource exists, which will allow more people to go out as knowledgeable and skilled players and coaches and raise the bar in our national pastime.

Both books are a must!

Both of Trent Mongero's books are a must own. No matter if you are new to coaching/playing baseball or if you are a seasoned veteran. There are some great tips and techniques he goes over. The DVD's are of great picture and sound quality and will not leave you second guessing what is expected from each drill. I am a varsity baseball coach, and even after so many years of my specific drills, I started utilizing quite a few of Coach Mongero's drills in my practices. These tips and drills are tried and true!

Simple, every day apologetics at its best!

Smooth Stones is now the third book I've read from Cruciform Press (the first two being Cruciform and the pilot book Sexual Detox by Tim Challies) and it is in my humble opinion the best book yet from this young publishing company. Joe takes on six of the biggest questions that challenge Christianity, namely:

Is There a God?
Does Science Disprove God's Existence?
Is the Bible Authentic and True?
The Question of Evil and Suffering
Aren't All Religions the Same?
Is Jesus for Real?

I know, I know, one of the chapter titles isn't in the form of a question. That bugged me too. But after flying through this book in one day, I was ready to forgive. As a self-proclaimed apologist, I pride myself in at least being familiar with all the big questions and answers surrounding Christian apologetics. Yet Joe surprised me on more than one occasion with simple and fresh approaches to answering these popular challenges.

The simple beauty of this book is in its brevity. This book may be the best resource I've seen for a church to keep on hand to answer common objections in every day language. I know of a number of young men in my church family who would benefit from reading a book like this, but would instantly start having heart complications if I suggested they read anything larger. I, for one, will be commending this book to my pastor to keep on hand for those questioning Christianity.

An apologist must be a scientist who rationally defends against objections of non-believers and provides logical arguments for the Christian worldview. But an apologist must also have the touch of an artist and the subjective sense to infer the needs of the person on the other side of the discussion.

Most of us will not stand at a podium opposite a professor in a debate on a college campus. The people to whom most of us will make a defense of Christian believing are people like us. Many will come with bumper sticker thin statements they mistake for arguments, but also with deep wounds these arguments cover.

Joe Coffey (who is also co-author of Red Like Blood) has written a helpful book for Christians (and non-believers) who have head-and-heart questions about, or objections to, Christian believing. And therefore, Smooth Stones fulfills the science and the art of apologetics. By publisher design, the book is a short 106 pages. David was diminutive compared to Goliath and so this book, aptly intoning the David and Goliath story, seeks to bring down some of the Goliath questions of our day without the benefit (or hindrance) of several hundred pages.

I liked Smooth Stones. It has an easy conversational style. Coffey was able to take complex topics such as God's existence, the authenticity of the Bible, pluralism, and the problem of evil and demonstrate for the head and the heart that Christianity has the best explanatory power of any worldview. In other words, Christianity best fits and explains our reality.

I particularly appreciated the answers for the head and answers for the heart sections at the end of each chapter. Sometimes in apologetics we have the right answers to questions not being asked. There are times in evangelism and teaching when the question asked is not the real issue. Coffey does a nice job of supplying the reader with avenues to explore each issue in both the head and the heart arenas.

I would recommend Smooth Stones for people new to apologetics who want to have a very good grip on several contemporary objections to Christian believing. I also think this would make a good text for High School and College ministries that wish to provide a good and readable resource for their students. As a gift for a non-believer, I think Smooth Stones would be good for those whose objections to Christian believing are not too deeply entrenched. This is not a slight on the content of the book, but rather the length precludes quite a bit of discussion that could be had.

Excellent Primer on Apologetics

This was an excellent primer on getting started in apologetics and dealing with some of the most common questions regarding Christianity. Questions such as 'is there a God?', 'is the Bible authentic and true?', science and faith, religious pluralism (don't all religions lead to God?), 'the question of evil and suffering', and 'is Jesus for real?'. Answers and examples were given for dealing with each of these issues in a loving and respectful way. The importance of apologetics in our postmodern world is quite clear and this book offers a way to get one's feet wet in defending the faith.

Recommended for those who see the need for apologetics but aren't really sure where to start or how to defend these questions.

Useless

I am a little hesitant about writing a bad review since I was never even able to use MyFrenchLab but thought it might be helpful to anyone buying a used book.
New textbooks come with their very own access code. I bought mine used so I purchased the access separately. I wanted to see what the French Lab offered since I work full time and have no access to the school's language lab It was very difficult to sign in but I'm not sure it all has to do with the product.

My professor evidently didn't register or register correctly which was annoying. I spoke with someone at the help department who was helpful and got me past the first step but I didn't have the correct class ID. So my teacher contacted Pearson and he got an email with class ID, etc, which I tried and still didn't work. So I have never been able to access. I don't even know what the FrenchLab has to offer and may have been a disappointment but after spending over $60 it would have been nice to come to that conclusion myself.

It's all right.

I don't care for this book that much because it is disorganized and repeatedly "teaches" you words and phrases without ever translating them. I came in with a pretty solid knowledge of French and there were things I had to go look up online that the book never bothered to explain. Instructions for a section would be presented in French, which would be fine if some of the vocabulary or grammar rules had actually been in English first. Not a big fan of this one.

Good, somewhat misleading description.

When browsing different cards for this ebook I was looking for an 24 month subscription since I'm taking 4 french classes in a row, and my understanding was this was 24 months of both the ebook and the myfrenchlab, but it turns out this is only 24 months to the ebook, and 6 months to the myfrenchlab. I "lucked" out I suppose, and next semester is the last semester this book will be used, and with any luck I won't need myfrenchlab either.

Love conquers the haze that life brings

Isla is a delight. Beautiful. Talented. Innocent. Young. Independent. Committed to her goals. She's also been exploited and defrauded by the mother who should have loved her and grieves for the grandmother who did. Gabriel falls for her the minute he sees her. How could he not. She's his other half -- the woman he didn't know he was looking for. He has a few missteps in courting Isla, but with patience, great sex, trust and intimacy, they find their HEA. This is a story about family, greed, and unconditional love. It will touch your heart.

Oh, how I love Gabriel Foster. He's just too freaking Hot! The chemistry between him & Isla is so smoldering, I couldn't get enough. I waited months for this book, and Deborah did not disappoint! I've read everything Deborah has written, and am in love with her literary brilliance. So looking forward to Torn, and reading about the youngest Foster brother Asher. #lovethosefostermen

A Refreshing Read

This is something I have not read in a while. A straight forward romance story with no nefarious villains in the backround or guns blazing. The story is told by alternating between Gabriel and Isla so you get both points of view in what is happening. Gabriel Foster is the CEO of Foster Enterprises which is a huge family owned business and Isla is a store clerk working in one of his lingerie shops. The worst thing you could say about Gabriel is that he goes through a multitude of women as a release for tension and sex, never getting too emotionally involved with any until he meets Isla. Isla is working toward the goal of going to school to become a professional violinist. The author manages to develop both characters to the extent you know them and are drawn into the story caring about them which makes the sex scenes blazing hot enough to combust my Kindle. Even with as many romance stories as I have read, this story came across as fresh and caught my interest and I know how much I liked this book when I came to the end and wanted to continue reading more about Gabriel and Isla. An unbelievable bargain at $2.99-you can't go wrong.

Needs reading more than once

Having read Company of Adventurers, I read his first book again and enjoyed it far more. There are a few adventures that are unbelievable but he tells a good tale. I prefer other African hunter's tales more - such as Pondoro- but this book is worth owning. You'll read it more than once!

This is a great book if you are interested in African as it was when men first started the exploration and settlement of the Dark Continent. I found it riveting and very revealing of the character of men that it takes to under take such exploration. It also reveals the character of many of the Natives of the Continent that John Boyes met. Some great and there were some who where not so great.
