College Geometry: An Introduction to the Modern Geometry of the Triangle and the Circle (Dover Books on Mathematics), by Nathan Altshiller

Translated into many languages, this book was in continuous use as the standard university-level text for a quarter-century, until it was revised and enlarged by the author in 1952. World-renowned writer and researcher Nathan Altshiller-Court (1881–1968) was a professor of mathematics at the University of Oklahoma for more than thirty years. His revised introduction to modern geometry offers today's students the benefits of his many years of teaching experience.
The first part of the text stresses construction problems, proceeding to surveys of similitude and homothecy, properties of the triangle and the quadrilateral, and harmonic division. Subsequent chapters explore the geometry of the circle—including inverse points, orthogonals, coaxals, and the problem of Apollonius and triangle geometry, focusing on Lemoine and Brocard geometry, isogonal lines, Tucker circles, and the orthopole. Numerous exercises of varying degrees of difficulty appear throughout the text.

A classic on Euclidean geometry
By J. Bogaarts
Thank you Dover!! This is one of the two English books in print that give a fairly complete introduction to advanced Euclidean geometry, the other one being the comparable text by R A Johnson, Advanced Euclidean Geometry (Dover Books on Mathematics). The book contains all the classical theorems with full proofs, including many theorems that belong to the so called triangle geometry that was developed in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Due to geometry software the subject is becoming popular again. The book also contains a treasure of exercises, but no solutions which could be a nuisance. But what use are the solutions? Problems should be solved and not looked up!. Many problems are about geometric constructions. If you prepare for a mathematical contest or if you are interested in a complete overview of the classical plane geometry (for instance after reading Ross Honsberger's "Episodes"), this is your book.

The book assumes that you are familiar with simple geometrical concepts like congruence of triangles, parallelograms, circles and the most elementary theorems and constructions as can be found in Kiselev's book Kiselev's Geometry / Book I. Planimetry.

They could have made the book bigger
By O. Long
The book reads well, but handles badly. This type of book should be printed on larger paper and have a spine that makes it easy to lay it open. If you're drawing the diagrams its hard to keep the book open while you draw. The geometry is excellent, the physical aspects of the book not so much.

Fills a Niche
By Cory Dean
A rather boring, talkative book on "college geometry;" one would be better off using Johnson's Advanced Euclidean Geometry (also from Dover). Big warning: Very few colleges actually offer geometry courses in Euclidean geometry, which is what this book covers. The biggest feature of this book is its plethora of construction problems. While fun for those who enjoy such problems, it is of little use to anyone at the college level, save perhaps math education majors (and even then, that is doubtful), and of even less use to math contest participants. Few of these types of problems pop up, and a thorough understanding of Euclidean geometry is sufficient to tackle them. Enjoy the book for some unique problems if you have the time and extra pocket change, but it won't change your view on the world or geometry. This would not be my first choice to give, but for the student who has breezed through everything else, this provides a nice change of pace.
This book assumes a STRONG background in high school geometry, particularly in synthetic (i.e. proof based without co-ordinates) geometry.

The Excruciating History of Dentistry: Toothsome Tales & Oral Oddities from Babylon to Braces, by James Wynbrandt

For those on both sides of the dreaded dentist's chair, James Wynbrandt has written a witty, colorful, and richly informative history of the art and science of dentistry. To all of those dental patients whose whine rises in tandem with that of the drill, take note: You would do well to stifle your terror and instead offer thanks to Apollonia, the patron saint of toothache sufferers, that you face only fleeting discomfort rather than the disfiguring distress, or slow agonizing death oft meted out by dental-care providers of the past. The transition from yesterday's ignorance, misapprehension, and superstition to the enlightened and nerve-deadened protocols of today has been a long, slow, and very painful process.

For example, did you know that:
*Among the toothache remedies favored by Pierre Fauchard, the father of dentistry, was rinsing the mouth liberally with one's own urine.
*George Washington never had wooden teeth. However, his chronic dental problems may have impacted the outcome of the American Revolution.
*Soldiers in the Civil War needed at least two opposing front teeth to rip open powder envelopes. Some men called up for induction had their front teeth extracted to avoid service.
*Teeth were harvested from as many as fifty thousand corpses after the Battle of Waterloo, a huge crop later used for dentures and transplants that became known as "Waterloo Teeth."

From Publishers Weekly
Not a dentist by profession but a humorist, Wynbrandt brings an irreverent approach to the seemingly colorless topic of dentistry. All the names and dates of important discoveries and advances in dental practice are here, but they are delivered along with an endless supply of tales ranging from the comical to the macabre. From the almost universal belief in "tooth worms" as the cause of cavities to "spirits and demons as agents of infirmity," superstitions and folk remedies throughout the world are thoroughly covered. Admitting that dentistry has historically been the domain of "incompetents, ignoramuses, quacks, and charlatans," Wynbrandt creates vivid images of medieval marketplace hucksters and "barber-surgeons" who advertised by displaying buckets of blood in their windows. Even as dentistry slowly moved into the realm of legitimate medicine, its trial-and-error practice included the use of leeches, bloodletting, urine mouthwashes, poisonous and highly addictive painkillers (including morphine and cocaine) and deadly radiation. Wynbrandt makes his point well that "we are fortunate to live in the golden era of 'painless' dentistry," and indeed "a dentally pampered culture" in which cosmetic concerns have all but overtaken the practice. This is an exhaustive, entertaining history that is likely to appeal mostly to... dentists. Eight pages of b&w illustrations, not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
The history of dentistry is a subject not well known to patients who dread their semiannual visit. They may not realize that the temporary discomfort they face is negligible compared with the pain and distress endured by patients of previous eras. The author reports that at times dental treatments were more bloody and barbarous than beneficial. He discusses the development of dentistry as a profession, the use of different anesthetics, and the evolution of dentures and dental prosthetics, among other topics. Much of the book is devoted to anecdotes illustrating discontinued dental practices. Wynbrandt thoroughly researched this topic, but it is not likely to be of interest to the average reader. His book is more suited to collections in the history of science and medicine in academic libraries.?Bruce Slutsky, New Jersey Inst. of Technology Lib., Newark

From Kirkus Reviews
A breezy romp through the history of dentistry that will be excruciating only for those pained by word play, especially puns. Comedy writer Wynbrandt has fun with this one, but he has filled it with facts, too. He covers the world of tooth care from the Babylonians of 5000 b.c., worms and devils and treated them with henbane and prayer, to today's film stars with their dentist-crafted perfect smiles. Here one learns of the dental glory that was Rome (the first cavity is said to have been filled in the first century a.d.), the itinerant tooth-drawers of the Middle Ages and later eras. (``Not all tooth-drawers were crooks and deceivers. Some were merely incompetent.''), the beginnings of the modern dental era in 18th-century France, and the profession's 19th-century efforts to rid itself of quacks and charlatans (the world's first dental college opened in 1840). Wynbrandt wittily chronicles the development of anesthetics, fluoride, X-rays, drills, dental chairs, and even toothpicks. George Washington's famous false teeth are, of course, discussed; so is Ulysses S. Grant's dental work and George Custer's last toothbrush. Folklore, myth, religion, movies, poetry, and advertisements--all are tapped by Wynbrandt, who quotes liberally from a variety of contemporary sources to bring his light-hearted history to life. While sensitive dentists may wince at having their profession's rough-and-tumble past revealed, dental patients are more likely to feel relief at having been born in the modern era of dentistry. Both groups are in for a good laugh. (8 pages b&w illustrations, not seen) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Well researched, and brilliantly funny
By Meredith B. Bishop
From its quirky title through the painful truths of the profession, the writing is masterful. If you have a mind for tongue in cheek humor beautifully written, the book is for you. Not a subject you ever cared much about? It doesn't matter. This author makes it fun.

Fun Book
By J. Monirian
I'm a dental student, and this was full of interesting little tid bits about the history of dentistry. It's dry in places, and to be honest I haven't even finished it, but it's been a fun book of dental trivia so far.

Ouch! Oh, Please Stop! I'm Dying! - A History of Dental PAIN!
By kone
This is probably a book that will only appeal to people in the dental profession, historians, and sadomasochists. The author does a nice job of describing the excruciatingly painful history of dentistry. With the advent of processed sugar (first extracted from sugar cane grown in the Caribbean Islands), and then transported worldwide, the so-called western sugar diet promoted tooth decay never seen before in human history. A high sugar diet with inadequate oral hygiene led to untold pain and suffering that is worthy of a notation in human history. This book explains the state of dentistry from the beginning of recorded civilization to the present. It is fascinating reading for someone interested in this topic. This book is certainly written for a target audience, but it can make an interesting "coffee-table" book that is certain to "extract" much conversation. Kone

About the Author
Jules Verne studied law but began writing stories and working in theatre as well. When Verne’s father discovered his son was writing, he promptly withdrew his financial support. Verne then worked as a stockbroker. His wife encouraged him to pursue his writing, and he became acquainted with Pierre-Jules Hetzel, an important French publisher. Hetzel helped improve Verne's writings, which until then had been repeatedly rejected by other publishers. He died a wealthy man in 1905.

Typical Verne
By CKE
I would like to start off by applauding Amazon and the publisher for printing this relatively obscure title. A reader looking for the mainstream works by Verne has multiple options - those of us who want to read a larger selection of his works ...must search!

"The Underground City" is a relatively short but entertaining novel. The first 100 pages read very fast - and reminded me strongly of "Journey to the Center of the Earth". The final 80 pages were a little more hoo-hum... and I was left disappointed in the ending. In fact, the novel was a little disjointed - and I wondered if this was one of the woks that was finished by Verne's son after his death (Which I still do not know).

Some reveiwers find the story unrealistic... well that is to be expected by Verne. While many think of his works as "Science Fiction" I think they have moved to the genre of fantasy. Verne transports you to a time and place where science was seen as having limitless possibilities... now in the 21st century we better understand what is possible and what is just our imagination.

"The Underground City" is a typical work by Verne. Certainly not his greatest work - it really doesn't compare to "The Mysterious Island". Yet, most fans will be satisified that they were able to find and read something that is just "typical" Verne.

Don't Buy This Edition!
By Gretchen Renshaw
This is a poorly formatted edition of the public domain translation available several places on the internet. This translation was heavily edited for the english language edition by Verne's publisher. For a new translation from the original french version, containing three more chapters, try ISBN 1-84282-080-x. It is more enjoyable reading.

not typical, but worth reading
By Amazon Customer
With so many formula cookie cutter books being published these days, it's refreshing to find this little known gem by the famous Jules Verne. While not his best book, Verne was still better on his weaker days than many others writers on their best days. Well worth the price. You won't be disappointed.
