About the Author

Erin E. O’Connor is an associate professor of history at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. She has over a decade of teaching experience in both private and public institutions of higher education, where she has taught a wide variety of courses on Latin American and world history. O’Connor’s research has focused on gender, ethnicity, and nation-state formation in nineteenth-century Latin America, which she explored in her first monograph, Gender, Indian, Nation: The Contradictions of Making Ecuador, 1830-1925 (Arizona, 2007). Her current research scrutinizes the multiple public implications of domesticity in Spanish America, investigating how both elite and poor individuals and families engaged with changing gender laws.

 

Leo J. Garofalo is an associate professor of history at Connecticut College. Since 2000, he has taught majors and non-majors in the US and South America about colonial Latin America, the African Diaspora, modern politics and revolution, and immigration and migration issues. Garofalo's research explores the making of race in colonial Andean societies and the movement of people of African descent in the early Iberian worlds embracing three continents. His most recent book explores the impact of the Diaspora on the Americas and is co-authored with Kathryn Joy McKnight, Afro-Latino Voices: Narratives from the Early Modern Ibero-American Atlantic World, 1550-1812 (Hackett, 2009). Currently he is researching the experiences of black sailors, soldiers, and popular saints and how they carved out a place of belonging and respect for themselves within the Spanish and Portuguese empires.

Modern Latin America

I had this book assigned to me while I took my Modern Latin America and it was a great companion to the text book that was assigned as well because it provided an in-depth & personal narrative to the course as we proceeded to look at Latin America in modern times. Not to mention that the Professor I was taking was published in this volume. Although I think that it could be expanded to include a GLBT perspective this will have to wait till the next edition.

copiously illustrated handbook for state-of-the-art publishing techniques

The nine chapter titles of the Content indicate the scope of the material as well as the shift in the regard of these with many contemporary popular and trade publications: Editorial Concept, Idea; Object; Structure; Navigation; Typography; Layout, Grid; Cover; Visual Language; The Next Chapter. Other terms such as Navigation and Visual Language are ones from computer use, especially website considerations and design, which are influencing periodicals newspapers, and books. "From the positioning of pull quotes to the different styles of page numbering, from the artful use of psychological techniques to lead the reader's eye into the story, to the ever-improving art of typography..." from Andrew Losowsky's "Introduction" specifies some of the details being affected by the ideas, concepts, and techniques in the chapters.

While innovative and experimental design practices are being freely used by print publications, this is to enhance for the reader and to distinguish for reasons of market identity and competition what are meant to be basically print publications. As Losowsky also writes, "To argue that print will be entirely replaced by technology is to repeat a hugh misunderstanding of one of the more fundamental aspects of printing. For example, Pulp is a new type of travel guide which features a crime novel with actual locations followed by promotions of these. This idea thus brings together the popular literature field of crime fiction with information for tourists adding an extra dimension to each of the elements. A multi-language fashion magazine, publications showcasing new artistic talent, and self-published works are among other types to be found in this chapter.

Although "Turning Pages" is about ninety percent visual, its text should not be overlooked. More than simply captions for the visual material, related text notes what to look for in the visual material and often explains its purpose and source. Apart from annotation-like text, there are also interspersed editorial commentary and quotes by designers, typographers, and other professionals whose work is displayed. In short, the text is instructive.

The relevance and even value of this book for getting abreast of the state-of-the-art work being done in the publishing field mostly in Europe and to a lesser-extent the United States cannot be overstated. Professionals and talented students and newcomers in the field would be missing something by not going through this work with keen attention.

Amazing resource

As a graphic designer, I'm constantly complaining about the lack of new and interesting design in print media. So I was thrilled to find this book from my favorite publisher. It shows excellent examples of a thriving, edgy editorial design in print publications, like Apartamento, Domus, a few German publications. Maybe one of the most interesting parts is the documentation of online media redefined via interactive graphics and data visualization a la The New York Times and others. I'll complain no more. An excellent resource for those who feel stifled by traditional stagnant print media.

Any person in the arts knows that you can never have enough artistic stimuli to captivate your imagination and create a top notch design. As a graphic designer I am extremely impressed with the layout and use of typography. At first it can seem a bit over stimulating, but it is beautifully done nonetheless, and the content is perfect for any new or experienced designer. In a minor stretch of credulity, JennySoo returns to rescue her wounded master. The nicely paced, tightly written text captures the excitement and drama of the situation. The full-page, textured paintings carry the action forward, while their misty quality suggests a time gone by. An opening storyteller's note provides necessary background and an informative afterword provides more details about the Pony Express. This is a good introduction to the subject for youngsters not quite ready for Steven Kroll's longer and strictly factual Pony Express! Saddle up for a ride with the Pony Express

Join Pony Express rider Johnny Free and his pony JennySoo as they deliver the mail. This picture book tells the story of a nights ride where Johnny and JennySoo meet up with seven Paiute warriors. Read this book to find out how they escape them.
The oil paintings in the book were really pretty. I like the story. It kept the readers attention and kept you wondering what was going to happen nest.
We recommend this book to for adult and children to share together to learn more about the Pony Express. It's a great history lesson. The story it's self is fiction but on the last page the author gives us some background on the real Pony Express.

A Remedy for What Ails Us Today

This book wasn't quite what I expected, but I learned a lot from it. Life can be like that - and I think it is fair to say that this is one theme in the book. Funny how that happened.

Oddly enough, as I write this, my wife is watching the New York Housewives on TV, and two of them are running a Spartan Race. Quite a coincidence, given that these races are the backdrop for the book. One of the women did not enjoy the experience. Her husband tried to explain the point of what they did, but she didn't get it.

I had never heard of Spartan races before reading this book. Think a race through an obstacle course from hell, and you'll get the picture. Big, unexpected challenges.

The point of these races seems to be to push the runners hard and teach them something about life in the process - in a word, how to overcome. Or maybe, it's better to say that they teach people something about how life really is/should be, as opposed to the "fake" one that today's society has created/imposed upon us (or most of us). Doing the seeming impossible is possible if one applies the Spartan "way".

The book is critical of how children are coddled today, even to the point of being given prizes for showing up to a competition, whether they win of lose. I'm in my 50's, and this is certainly not how it was when I was a kid - what happened? Is there any wonder why kids grow up so "entitled" now? A rude awakening is the result. Bad all around.

There is also criticism of many aspects of modern life. Too much electronics, too much bad food, not enough exercise, etc. No argument here. I made some changes in my life regarding all this recently and am happy with the results.

As an aside, I have to say that the 3-D effect on the cover was very cool. Not sure how they did it.

Overall, I liked the book very much. It made many great points. The writing was very good and kept me interested. Better than many books I've read lately.

I didn't like that the book seemed a bit too much about the Spartan Races/the physical and not enough about what to do with the lessons learned. It might have been a bit more balanced if the book went into other difficult challenges that might teach the same lessons, and that spiritual challenges might get you there as well. Did I miss any of this in the book? Maybe it was there, but didn't seem to be very directly there if so. To me, the real point of pushing yourself so hard physically with a Spartan Race is to have a transforming "spiritual" experience or put yourself on the road to having one - in fairness, the book did seem to go there indirectly, but I didn't see it go there directly, which I think it should have.

In any case, I think this book provides a path for "shock therapy" for what ails us as a society today. Might not work for everyone without a lot of preparation - you do have to be pretty tough to take this path - but I think it would get results.

Would I try it? Hmm... I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

Mainly a book to sell the authors spartan events

I'm truly disappointed in this book. I had it on pre-order and was under the impression that Joe De Sena, who is admittedly an absolute bad ass, would share his wisdom and secrets to success. Instead, 80% of the book is describing the Spartan Races he runs and testimonials/stories from people who have done one of his races. The actual useful content is minimal and to suggest its 20% useful content is too generous.

Other than the book being an obvious marketing ploy to sell his events, the editing is shocking. There is no flow to the book nor substance.

If the title is something that interests you I would suggest just going on his Spartan events and saving the time and financial investment on this book. I'm sure that people who've ran his races would enjoy this book more but personally, I'm thoroughly disappointed.

Surprisingly good for a book that is essentially an extended advertisement for extreme race events run by the author

Spartan races are those events made famous with titles such as "This race might kill you" and "This race likely will kill you". Their blanket waivers, signed by all race participants, go to graphic lengths to point out the many creative ways in which you may be permanently injured - or die. From the mind that brought young (mostly) men to this sport comes a book that seems partly a justification for the existence of these races, partly an advertisement and finally a mantra for a more adventurous way to live our lives.

Despite the constant sense of urgency, the blatant self-aggrandizement and behavior attributed to the author, by his own hand, that borders in the masochistic, I found this book to be enjoyable. The races are described in gory detail and, despite the reason centers in my brain threatening to quit in protest, I found myself actually considering one of the easier races offered by Joe De Sena.

This book will be appreciated by the usual cast of characters - Cross Fit junkies, triathloners looking for something edgier, fraternity brothers, college athletes and the more fit among desk jockeys. It gives a fairly coherent and complete explanation of why some people choose this lifestyle, how it adds to their lives, and the price they sometimes pay for their devotion. Moreover Mr. De Sena draws connections between Spartan athletes behavior on and off the battlefield. Some may find these stretched but it's not unreasonable to conclude grit is something that applies to many of life's arenas.
