Relativistic Rhinos!
By KB
I recently relived my freshman year at Rice by buying several introductions to Special Relativity from Amazon. When I want to learn something, I usually buy several books on the same subject and read them all at the same time. Back then, of course, I checked them out of the library. Out of the books I just read, I like this one by Helliwell the most. The book by Bondi was an enjoyable read that took half a day. If I were going to teach the subject to a complete beginner, I might start with Bondi's book. I may even reread it for his historical information and perspective. If I needed to pass an exam, I think I would work through the book by James H. Smith. It is very much the distilled essence of basic Special Relativity. The presentation is the elegant product of decades of experience. However, it is still basic, and does not get much into four-dimensional formulations and never mentions calculus. Although I called it the distilled essence, I don't mean to imply that it skips steps. It is very thorough, and it is the one I would study carefully to ace an exam.

Nevertheless, I think the Helliwell book is my favorite. Ya gotta love a book with relativistic rhinoceroses in it! That's right, those two rhinos that you see on the Amazon picture are travelling towards each other at .99C each. Does that mean their relative velocity is 1.98C? You'll have to read the book to find out.

This book covers all the standard material of Special Relativity, but also has things that other books don't have. For example, he covers the Fizeau experiment decades before the Michelson-Morley experiment. Personally, I am fascinated by the attempts of the 19th century geniuses to figure out what the heck light is and what it is doing. Every book covers the twin paradox, and sometimes the pole vaulter paradox, but Helliwell also does the mind-blowing "paradox" of the rotating solid object. When a block is moving towards us at relativistic speed it appears rotated, but not distorted (what happened to the contraction?), and at some point we see the back of the block, even though it hasn't passed us yet. Too bad he didn't analyze the rhinoceroses that way.

I find his derivation of relativistic momentum and energy to be the best, for example, Chapter 8. He approaches all of the secondary consequences of Special Relativity the way someone with good intuition about physics and a little bit of math skill might figure them out for the first time. That goes also for his explanations of forces and electromagnetism.

I have to take a 6 hour plane flight soon. Out of all these short books I purchased recently on Special Relativity, the one I'm planning to take on board with me is the Helliwell book.

The Generals' War : The Inside Story of the Conflict in the Gulf, by Michael R. Gordon, General Bernard E. Trainor

Michael R. Gordon and General Bernard E. Trainor provide a definitive, behind-the-scenes account and anaylsis of the planning and execution of the Gulf War. While one war was being waged against Iraq, another was being fought among the generals themselves. "The Generals' War" offers unvarnished portraits of the top military commanders, challenges the performances of Powell, Schwarzkopf, and their generals, and provides disturbing information about the power struggles within the American high command. Using previously undisclosed military documents, "The Generals' War" goes beyond what happened to explain why and how, exploding myths that have crept into other accounts of the war.

From Publishers Weekly
Drawing on interviews with senior officials and newly declassified documents, Gordon and Trainor provide a behind-the-scenes look at the Gulf War's generalship. The dominant figure, then-chairman of the joint chiefs General Colin Powell, is spotlighted as a politico-military maestro overseeing the dawn of a new era in military technology. In their review of the short, violent, one-sided war, the authors uncover the problems of cooperation among coalition forces and reveal details of interservice tensions, as well as difficulties within the U.S. branches themselves. This meticulous reconstruction of American leadership in Desert Shield/Desert Storm presents the conflict as a laboratory for testing new weapons and doctrine and the services' capacity for cooperation in the field. It also serves as an object lesson in the failure of deterrence and the problem of war termination, with a discussion of President Bush's premature cease-fire order. Gordon is chief New York Times Pentagon correspondent; Trainor is military columnist for the Times. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
If the Vietnam War was conducted by politicians in Washington, the war for Kuwait was, according to New York Times correspondent Gordon and retired general Trainor, our "generals' war." The authors astutely conclude that President Bush understood what his predecessors never did. Neither Johnson nor Nixon, nor for that matter National Security Council adviser Henry Kissinger, allowed the military to wage a winning war. The lesson was well learned by the savvy Gen. Colin Powell, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who directed his subordinates to lash out against the Iraqis with everything we had save for nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. Kuwait was not Vietnam, however, and the unmotivated Iraqis were not the Vietcong. Aggrandized as "the world's fourth largest military," the enemy fizzled away within hours when confronted with the world's premier military force. Thus, it came as no surprise that Washington won the battle, but with Saddam Hussein still in power four years after hostilities ended, has it won the war? This cogent analysis provides several disturbing answers worthy of our attention. Recommended for informed lay readers and specialists.

From Booklist
This inside view of the battle between high U.S. command officers in the conflict with Iraq is a fascinating and sustained analysis of the friction that takes place in real warfare. Writer Gordon teams with retired Marine general Bernard Trainor to record the struggles of the generals of the combined services in their endeavor to plan and execute the massive 500,000-troop movement that achieved the short and stunning victory over Iraqi forces. An important question is posed: Why didn't the generals press on to dismantle the Republican Guard of Saddam Hussein, and what were the consequences of their decision against such an act? The Air Force strategy called for constant precision bombing in the heart of Baghdad. Over 30 days of bombing weakened but did not finish off the enemy. The land attack, whose success was clearly foreshadowed, was concluded too soon and allowed Hussein to keep the Republican Guard intact. The authors believe that the cautious philosophy of General Colin Powell and the eagerness of General Norman Schwarzkopf to get out with an Army victory, combined with the decision of President Bush and his advisers, led to the unfortunate staying power of Saddam Hussein. The final conclusion is undeniable--the gate had not been closed in Iraq, and this book explains why. Eugene Sullivan

Well-documented, slightly biased history of Gulf War
By A Customer
The authors provide interesting, behind-the-scenes accounts of the political and military players in this war, based on many interviews. What unfolds is far different from what was said publicly at the time.

Occasionally, the New York Times reporter's and the retired Marine's apparent biases show through, detracting from an otherwise very good book. They seem to blame President Reagan's administration for not buying mine-clearing equipment for the Marines and the Navy, but then blame the Air Force--and not the administration--for using its money to buy items other than the latest survival radios for its aircrews. They also inaccurately claim that the Air Force developed a new doctrine for this war where they would be in charge of all theater airpower (a doctrinal concept developed by them during the North African campaign in World War II) and that the Strategic Air Command had controlled the B-52s deployed to Southeast Asia during the Viet Nam War (they actually were operationally controlled by the Theater), as well as a few other inaccurate items regarding the Air Force. It became rather apparent that all Services that were not Marines (and to a lesser extent, Navy) were denigrated. An example is their claim that the Air Force required that friendly aircraft obtain two means to verify an unknown aircraft's identification before firing on it in order to hold down the Navy's 'kill' rate (since the Navy had not invested in the systems to install two separate means of identification on each of their aircraft, they needed to contact the AWACS to obtain the second means). The Viet Nam War demonstrated this requirement and for whatever reason, the Navy had not addressed it in the interim--which the authors evidently refused to say.

After summarizing what the politicians and military should do differently next time (after acknowledging that the media's outcry that the military had created killing zones north of Kuwait City partially caused the premature ending of the war), they also conveniently omitted a recommendation on what the media should do differently.

Although the items cited above and a few similar ones throughout the book are distracting and cast some doubt on the entire book, their documented sources were sufficient (approximately one per page) to make them generally believable.

I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to know what occurred behind the scenes, with a caution that it should be read critically and not be used as the reader's only source.

A detailed and hard-hitting account of the Gulf War
By Michael J. Mazza
In "The Generals' War: The Inside Story of the Conflict in the Gulf," Michael R. Gordon and Bernard E. Trainor have crafted a fascinating work of military history. As the title indicates, the book places a heavy emphasis on the actions of the senior military officers involved in the planning and execution of the U.S.-led coalition's 1991 war against Iraq. In the preface, the authors note that this conflict "is without precedent in the annals of warfare. It was the dawn of a new era" (page x).

In their acknowledgements section, the authors discuss in detail the research that went into the writing of this book. They note that they interviewed administration officials, diplomats, allied military officers, and intelligence experts; they observe further that some "talked on the record; others on a not-for-attribution basis." They also drew on written responses that former president George Bush provided to their questions. Their research is meticulously documented in a lengthy set of endnotes (pages 479-520), thus enhancing the book's credibility. The text is further enhanced by thirteen detailed and clearly drawn maps that illuminate many aspects of the war: the Iraqi air defense system, coalition force deployment and movement, locations of oil fields, and more. Also included are photographs of many of the senior leaders involved in the war.

The book is full of fascinating details about many aspects of the war. The authors discuss the participation of various coalition forces in the campaign, as well as the diplomatic activities involving the USSR, Egypt, and other nations. Also discussed are friendly fire incidents and Iraqi POWs. I was particularly interested in the many details about the military hardware used by both coalition and Iraqi forces; the authors cover aircraft, naval vessels, sea and land mines, mine-clearing gear, tanks, and more. There are some really noteworthy battle scenes; particularly vivid is a description of a tank battle between U.S. and Iraqi forces--"an impressive tableau of destruction."

Gordon and Trainor are pointedly critical of many aspects of the conduct of the war. They discuss examples of rivalry and poor coordination between the different branches of the U.S. military, and also criticize the French and the Saudis. But the strongest and most sustained criticism is directed at General Norman Schwarzkopf. The authors assess both his command style and planning of the war and ultimately fault him for failing to achieve true joint warfare. The book places a heavy emphasis on the battle of Khafji; the authors discuss this engagement in detail and criticize both Schwarzkopf and General Colin Powell for failing to grasp its lessons.

Gordon and Trainor note that the Persian Gulf War was "a laboratory for the American military's new weapons and fighting doctrines." This well-written book vividly shows how hardware, tactics, diplomatic concerns, and personalities came together in the fighting of this war. This is a valuable addition to the military history of the late 20th century.

A Good Companion Piece to "Crusade"
By A Customer
This is the third book that I, a veteran of Desert Shield and Storm, have read about the Gulf War. I agree with the previous reviewers' comments that the book is judgmental (sometimes on peripheral issues). However, "judgmental" is not always a dirty word. The bottom line is that we failed to destroy the Republican Guard. Failing to do so made Saddam's survival much less problematic (see "Out of the Ashes" by the Cockburns for a good account of Hussein's astonishing resilience.
I also thought the argument about the battle of Khafji was intriguing. I didn't think it at the time, but our victory there should have told us we would roll over the Iraqis and that VII Corps' plans for a long campaign were unrealistic.
But as they say...
the saddest words of tongue or pen, are the words 'it might have been.'

Tools for fighting fair and dreaming again
By Martin Baggs
"It all starts with the vows: for richer or for poorer. . . . Every marriage starts with big hopes and dreams. . . . And then life happens." (p.3) The authors Scott and Bethany Palmer, experienced financial planners known as the money Couple, begin their new book with these words that ring true. For those of us who have been married for some time, we can understand this. The authors go on, "And over time through no fault of your own those dreams you had for your life together get put on the back burner and, one by one, they start to dry up and disappear." (p.4) Then they follow up this opening section with this intriguing claim: "If you've lost track of the dreams you used to have, we believe you can get them back. We believe you can reclaim the life you envisioned, one dream at a time." (p.6) When I read this excerpt I decided I wanted to check out their claims.

This is no Dave Ramsey tome, though. The Palmers are patently clear about this in their introduction:

"Before you jump in, we want to be clear about something: this book is not a guide to managing your money. You won't find tricks for creating a balanced budget or tips on saving money. . . . This book is about you and your marriage, It's about the way your money and your relationship combine to create a Money Relationship. That's right -- you and your spouse have a Money Relationship, just like you have an emotional relationship, a spiritual relationship, and a physical relationship." (p. xiv)

So, if you are looking to make or manage money, stay clear. This book won't help you. But if you want to understand this Money Relationship and reclaim your dreams, this book might hit the target.
The heart of the book focuses on the 5 Money Personalities: the Saver, the Spender, the Security-Seeker, the Risk-Taker and the Flyer. According to the Palmers, we all possess a primary money personality and a secondary one. These contribute to our unique money DNA and determine how we see the world.

Further, they posit that every decision in our marriage relationship is impacted by money, whether it relates to spending or saving, affording or dreaming. Whether we like it or not, money is there, an ever-present undercurrent impacting how we get along. Buy money, like religion and politics, is something we rarely discuss with others, even spouses. By discovering our own two money personalities and then those of our spouse, we can then see how they interact and lead us into financial arguments. With this knowledge and self-understanding we can begin to build a plan, not a budget, for how we approach money and spending. In so doing, the Palmers argue, we can recapture our dreams.

The book is short, at 180 pages, and is written in an approachable and easy-to-read manner. There is little of academic depth here, and that is one criticism. It could stand some references, or support for theses, like why are there 5 money personalities and not four or six (or even more). Yet perhaps this is nit-picking, since most readers will come to this for help, like visiting a counselor. Such people don't really want chapter and verse. They trust the expert and simply want tools to function better in their own lives and situations.

That said, the authors introduce us to several tools. The first is "the reveal," where we find our two money personalities and share with our spouse. They even offer a free yet simple quiz on-line to help with this. Even though I had correctly pegged my two money personalities, when I took the on-line quiz I was surprised to find they were reversed in terms of primary and secondary, and this helped me understand some of my financial worries. This tool is foundational to the rest.

So, too, is their concept of financial infidelity, where we keep some financial secrets, big or small, from our spouse. This forms the root of the financial arguing that often leads to divorce ("money has become the number one cause of divorce in the United States"), but can be nipped in the bud with the use of transparency and their other tools.

The final three tools are the Money Dump, the Money Huddle, and the E.N.D. The first is an exercise of looking at the pros and cons of your finances and then sharing one con with your spouse. The second is an intentional monthly connection point for 45 minutes, focused on your Money Relationship not your specific bills and budgets. And the third tool describes how to Huddle. The first 15 minutes is spent on Evaluation two simple numbers: "how much debt you have and how much you have in savings" (p.135). The second 15 minute focuses on Needs, those that relate uniquely to our own money personalities and impact our mutual Money Relationship. The tool allows us to be vulnerable and build trust. The final 15 minutes winds up with Dreams. Here is where we share our dreams and plan to make one or more happen.

These tools seem so obvious, almost common sense. They center on communication. But in our busy society, with differences between husband and wife, we may find it difficult to open up with our spouse, either through time or temperament. The beauty of these tools is that they encourage us to make the time and take the opportunity for such sharing. And for good measure, they give us the Stop (reacting out of anger), Drop (your financial assumptions), and Roll (up your sleeves and work it out) technique for fighting fair in financial arguments.

The book is intended to be read with your spouse over a period of 90 days. This is to force reflection and discussion, and to instill new habits in both. I must confess that I have not done this, since I was under a deadline to write this review. So I cannot comment on the efficacy of the tools, even though they appear practical. However, I am planning to go back and reread the book and work the exercises at the start of 2013 -- a New Year's resolution I intend to honor. And I am hoping to dream again!

Note: I received a free copy from Thomas Nelson Publishing but was not influenced to provide a positive review

Nice Noise, by Yuri Landman, Bart Hopkin

Hidden inside your guitar is a world of sounds, tone qualities, timbres, and effects that you will never find with conventional playing techniques. Some of these sounds are beautiful, some comical; some are edgy, exotic, subtle, raucous, mellifluous or strange. These are the sounds you can bring out with the prepared guitar techniques described in this book. The focus here is not on electronic effects; it is on things you can do physically to alter the ways the strings vibrate or the soundboard projects. Most of these preparations are easily put in place and just as easily removed. A few of them involve permanent modifications that can take an old guitar to turn it into something quite new. Whatever type of guitar you play -- acoustic or electric; classical, jazz, rock, avant-garde or other -- this book will show you new and unexpected ways to play it. Want to hear what the preparations sound like? Audio examples, fifty-nine of them altogether, can be found free of charge at nicenoise.bandcamp.com. And of course the book is extensively illustrated with color photographs showing the how the preparations are set up.

Nice Noise - the best tutorial and theory guide for understanding and creating experimental instruments, guitars and noise rock.
By Thomas H. Tolleson
This is as close and honest of a look into the specifics of creating custom instruments and modifying existing instruments (such as electric guitars) as you can get. Not only does it include photos and examples of prepared guitars by Thurston Moore and Sonic Youth, it includes the tunings, materials and specific tracks on which the instruments were used. Additionally, a large number of samples are available online for the book owners to download to hear the particular instruments, modifications and tunings in use. This book goes way beyond the simple "Ostrich tuning" drones used by Lou Reed to another world of entirely custom, customized and one-of-a-kind instruments.

The book completely does away with any mystique of tools and methods of creating experimental music and noise rock; it gives you a set of instructions to try different methods used to create different sounds yourself. Additionally, it provides much of the basic knowledge to begin to create your own experimental guitars and other instruments.

Even a synth lover will be able to find much of the theory and methods of creating sound and "detuning" of strings very useful in their synth work.

This book's an absolute must for the guitarist, budding instrument builder and noise/experimental music lover.

Great for avant guitarists
By Jeremiah J. Paddock
Wow! What an amazing book. I have talked with other musician friends about how great it would be if there was a compendium of guitar "tricks" for getting non-standard sounds out of your guitar. This is it! Innovative and inspiring. I think this is the best purchase I've made on amazon. The sound samples are on soundcloud so check them out.

Excellent book!
By C
Sorry, I know my review is a short and little useless, but the book is about what it says it is about ; experimental things you can do with your guitar! Physical modifications, from the very simple, to the trickier.
It's great, and opens up a lot of possibilities for new sounds. It is very imaginative!
All books by Bart Hopkin that I own are excellent. The only one I don't own is the "Wind Chimes" one, since I'm not really a "wind chime" kind of guy, but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I should just grab it anyway, in case it is even a fraction as interesting as the other books.

Thanks to the authors!

An Excellent Textbook on the General Epistles
By Brian C. Small
I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I first opened the package containing this book. This book is no flimsy paperback. The book is a large, attractive, solidly made hardcover with thick, glossy pages. So, it was with great anticipation that I began to explore the book.

The author, Karen Jobes, is the Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Wheaton College.

To begin, let me lay out the general contents of the book: The book consists of an introduction and fourteen chapters divided into four parts:
Part 1: Hebrews: The Book of Better Things
Part 2: Letters from Jesus' Brothers
Part 3: Letters from Peter
Part 4: Letters from John
The end-matter includes a glossary and indices on Scripture, Extrabiblical Ancient Texts, Authors, and Subjects.

For each one of the general epistles, Jobes basically follows the same format. She addresses introductory issues (authorship, date, genre, recipients, text, canonicity, and outline) and the theological message of each book. For some of the larger books--Hebrews, James, 1 Peter--she provides additional chapters dealing with theological (especially Christology) and ethical themes in the books.

Likewise, each chapter has virtually the same format. The title page for each chapter includes "goals for this chapter." The beginning of each chapter has a section on why the chapter or canonical book is important for the reader, followed by a text-box with key verses, followed by an outline of the chapter. Each chapter ends with key terms, questions for review or discussion, and a bibliography for suggested further reading. Each chapter is arranged topically. This, I think, is preferable than a simple sequential description of the contents of each canonical book--one can get that by simply reading the books! Each chapter is sprinkled copiously with pictures, charts, and text-boxes.

For the purposes of this review, I will give more detailed attention to Hebrews, but I will give some attention to the other general epistles. In the introductory chapter she explores the question of pseudonymity. She does not seem to come to any resolution to the question in the chapter, but seems to give the benefit of the doubt in favor of traditional authorship of the biblical books (6-12).

Chapter 1 introduces Hebrews and deals with the usual introductory topics. As for the addressees, Jobes does not settle for a Jewish or Gentile audience or a specific occasion (26-29). Jobes considers several locations for the destination of Hebrews (Jerusalem, Corinth, Asia Minor, Alexandria), but settles for Rome at the most probable one (29-32). She argues that Hebrews was most likely written between 60 and 70 AD (32-36). As for authorship, she rejects Paul as the author. She explores several other candidates without ultimately deciding for one (36-42). She considers Hebrews to be a sermon sent to a distant congregation (44). She gives an overview of the theology of Hebrews (Christology, God, Holy Spirit, New Covenant, Heaven, Dualism, Faith, Angelology). Of particular interest is that she does not regard the dualism of Hebrews as either Platonic or moral. The dualism is primarily temporal or eschatological in nature (47). She concludes the chapter with a brief discussion of the text and canonicity of Hebrews, and an outline of the book (50-53).

Chapter 2 deals with the concept of divine revelation and the use of the Old Testament (OT) in Hebrews. In the exordium the author of Hebrews contrasts two ages (past/last days), two audiences (ancestors/"us"), and two modes of revelation (prophets/Son), yet there is also a continuity of revelation between the two ages; God reveals himself to humanity (59-64). Jobes then briefly wrestles with modern challenges to the possibility of divine revelation (64-66). Jobes then discusses the use of the OT in Hebrews. Jobes notes that Hebrews made use of a version of the Septuagint (LXX) and that the author's arguments are sometimes based on the Greek text, rather than the Hebrew text (67-68). She also notes that the OT quotations are attributed to the persons of the Trinity, which clearly points to the fact that the author believed in the divine inspiration of the OT (68-72). While the OT is God's word, the author relativizes it with respect to the gospel of Christ. She notes that the OT's "illocutionary force" has changed, that is, its purpose within the context of God's progressive revelation has changed (72-73). She concludes the chapter by noting the curious fact that although the author states that God's final revelation is in Jesus, the author never quotes any of Jesus' teachings. The reason for this apparent omission is that Jesus himself is God's final revelation: "the identity of Jesus as the divine Son of God is what makes him the perfect and final revelation of God" (75).

Chapter 3 deals with the Christology of Hebrews which centers around two foci: Jesus as Son of God and High Priest. Jobes' presentation of Hebrews' Christology is rather straightforward. The exordium reveals both the nature of the Son and the Son's deeds (83-89). The title "Son of God" in ancient times had royal connotations, as well as Messianic connotations in Jewish literature (89-93). She remarks, "the title `Son of God,' as applied to Jesus, merges his messianic role as the human king of God's kingdom with his preexistent nature as a member of the Trinity" (93). As Son, Jesus is superior to the angels and to Moses (93-94). Jesus' incarnation was necessary for his priesthood; his human experiences of temptation and suffering, while being sinless, perfected him for his role (96-97). As High Priest of a new covenant, Jesus also was the ultimate sacrifice which made all other sacrifices obsolete (98-100). Since Jesus was not from the tribe of Levi, the author of Hebrews had to demonstrate that Jesus belonged to a superior order, the Melchizedek priesthood (100-106). While some scholars believe that the author viewed Melchizedek as a supernatural angelic being, Jobes seems to reject this notion (105-106). The two roles of Sonship and High Priesthood come together at Jesus' ascension when he receives his coronation after making purification for sins (108-111).

Chapter 4 covers the topic of soteriology in Hebrews. Jobes says that Hebrews' soteriology is a response to God's revelation in Christ (118). The basic need for humanity is purification from sin. The life and death of Jesus inaugurated the new covenant, because the people of God demonstrated their inability to keep the old covenant (118-119). Jesus' death was the full and final substitution that replaces the OT sacrifices and gives humanity the chance to escape the judgment of death, which is the inevitable consequence of their sin (119-120). Hebrews conceives salvation not only as a past event but a future one as well (120). Jesus becomes the source of eternal salvation through his sacrificial death, but this salvation is available only to those who continue to persevere in their faith. Perfection is an important theme in Hebrews. Jesus' suffering perfected him as a human being in that it completed his role as Messiah (124-125). Christ perfects human beings by bringing their redemption to completion. It is an eschatological perfection and not a moral perfection; nevertheless, believers are still called to pursue holiness (125-126). God's rest still remain for people to enter, so Hebrews warns its readers to avoid the example of the wilderness generation which failed to enter God's rest because of unbelief (127-128). Hebrews warns about the dangers of apostasy from the faith. Jobes presents both the Arminian and Calvinist positions on the warning passages of Hebrews, but she does settle the issue, leaving it for the reader to decide (135-140).

Three chapters are devoted to the Epistle of James. Chapter 5 deals with introductory issues and the major themes of James. Jobes believes that the most plausible scenario is that James, the half-brother of Jesus, wrote this "diaspora letter" sometime before 62 AD. Chapter 6 explores the Christology of James through both its explicit references to Jesus and its implicit Christology. Chapter 7 examines the issues of the epistle's relationship to Jesus' teachings and the Jewish wisdom tradition. It also addresses ethical issues such as godly speech, wealth and poverty, and the epistle's relationship to Paul's teaching on faith and works. Chapter 8 deals with introductory issues and the theology (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Christian Life) of the Epistle of Jude. Jobes leaves open the possibility that the author was the brother of James and half-brother of Jesus. She also explores Jude's use of the OT, the Pseudepigrapha, and its relationship to 2 Peter.

Three chapters are dedicated to 1 Peter. Chapter 9 deals with introductory issues and the purpose and message of 1 Peter. Jobes argues for the plausibility of Petrine authorship countering the common objections to Peter's authorship. Chapter 10 examines the Christology of 1 Peter. At the heart of Peter's Christology is the identification of Jesus with the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. Jobes explores the meaning of the difficult passage of 3:18-22, as well as other christological images in 1 Peter such as sacrificial lamb and living stone. Chapter 11 deals with ethical issues in the letter. Christians receive a new identity in light of God's saving acts in Jesus Christ. Christians should conduct themselves honorably before a pagan society and to imitate the example of Christ. Chapter 12 deals with introductory issues and the theological message (God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Eschatology) of 2 Peter. Jobes wrestles with the question of pseudonymous authorship of 2 Peter; she raises objections to theories of pseudonymous authorship, but ultimately leaves it an open question.

Chapter 13 addresses introductory issues of 1 John. Jobes seems to be favorable towards traditional Johannine authorship. The chapter also covers some of the major themes of 1 John, such as truth, dualism, Christology, and hamartiology. Finally, chapter 14 treats both 2 & 3 John.

The book is clearly designed as a textbook for a college class on the General Epistles. Jobes writes in a very readable style without dumbing it down. She deals with critical issues in an understandable way that should not be too overwhelming for the student. She provides many aids throughout the book that will help the student get at the important points of each chapter and the bibliographies at the end of each chapter direct the more inquisitive students to further avenues for research. As one would expect from a Zondervan textbook written by a Wheaton professor, the theological perspective is very conservative. Jobes seems to take many of the biblical stories at face value; hence a professor who is more skeptical of the historicity of the biblical stories may find her approach insufficient. But for the professor who is concerned about such things, the book is "faith-friendly"; while it explores critical issues, it does so in a non-threatening way for students who may have come out of conservative church backgrounds. At 14 chapters long, it is the ideal length for a semester-long class. A professor can easily assign a chapter a week for in-class discussions or simply as supplemental material. I find this to be a very excellent textbook in many ways.

Survey of the General Epistles
By Jacob Sweeney
It seems to me that scholarship on Paul and his letters dominate New Testament study. In terms of quantity of books produced, Paul is the number one contributor to the New Testament. Yet, it seems we forget that the Spirit inspired James, John, Jude and the author of Hebrews as much as he inspired Paul. It's essential for believers to study well those letters categorized as the "general "epistles".

Zondervan has wisely began publishing survey books which focus on particular books of the Bible. Rather than one volume survey works, authors are freed up to focus on those areas in which they excel. Karen Jobes (Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Wheaton College) has contributed an excellent survey of these massively important books.

In this book she survey's Hebrews, James, Jude and 1, 2 and 3 John. She breaks the book into parts based upon the books respective authors: Hebrews; James and Jude; 1, 2, 3 John. Within each part she focuses on major themes and each book's biblical and theological contributions. Each book of the Bible is a vast treasure trove of riches which need patient and faithful exploration. Jobes' book is a welcome resource to aid believer's and students in their study.

The old adage warns of judging a book by its cover. That is not to say that the cover doesn't matter. In a culture that places increasing value upon branding, logos and graphic design, it is appropriate to put thought into a book's cover and design. Saints of old would adorn their copies of Scripture with beautiful art. It added to the beauty and wonder of scripture. The Celtic Lindisfarne Gospels are a clear picture. Zondervan, in my opinion, is following in that ancient and sacred practice. This book is not Scripture. But it does expound the Scriptures. It is good and right to make the Scriptures - and those books which aid in their study - beautiful.

The beauty of the cover, the pages and the pictures within is matched by the excellent prose. Jobes does a wonderful job exploring and explaining the Scriptures. The outlines and breakdown of each book are illuminating and manageable. This is a book intended for learners and the uninitiated. You don't have to earn a PhD to understand.

This book was refreshing to read. It is simple, understandable and enjoyable to look at. It is not intimidating, technical or difficult. Jobes models true, Christian scholarship: confronting falsehood to expose it error and making the truth of God's word apparent to God's people. This is a must have book!

NOTE: In accordance with the regulations of the Federal Trade Commission I would like to state that I received a complementary copy of the aforementioned text for the purposes of review. I was not required to furnish a positive review.

A Survey of the Catholic Epistles
By Brendan Knox
Most New Testament Survey books cover the entirety of the New Testament. Zondervan is currently releasing a series of survey textbooks that devote a whole book to specific portions of the Bible such as the Prophets, the Pauline Epistles, the Gospels, and so on. The most recent release is Karen Jobes' survey of the "catholic" or "general" epistles. Focusing in on the general epistles in one book is a very helpful way to study the material in a more in-depth manner rather than using a standard survey textbook like Gundry. What we have with Jobes' book is a 500 page survey of these epistles. This allows Jobes to go into a good bit of depth into each of these epistles.

Jobes' survey covers a variety of issues concerning these books. The standard issues of composition, text, background, and audience are of course all considered. But Jobes also goes beyond that by discussing theological issues that arise in the reading of these ancient and inspired texts. In particular her survey of Hebrews is theologically rich and contains many helpful discussions. She also deals with some of those pesky perennial questions that arise in the study of these books such as the relationship between Jude and 2 Peter and the theology of James as it relates to justification.

Like many survey books Jobes' book contains colorful pictures and illustrations as well as sidebars, questions, and bibliographies for further study. Jobes' book contains a good mix of background discussion, theology, and application for our modern day. The student will come away from this textbook with a better appreciation for the importance and relevance of these epistles of the New Testament. Hebrews is massively important for New Testament theology and Jobes spends a good portion of the book and a number of chapters discussing Hebrews. If you are interested in digging deeper into these epistles then I would highly recommend Jobes' survey. This book is useful for college and seminary students writing papers on these epistles as well as pastors preaching through these texts due to the large amount of theological, textual, and historical discussion.

Choosing in Groups: Analytical Politics Revisited, by Michael C. Munger

This book is an introduction to the logic and analytics of group choice. To understand how political institutions work, it is important to isolate what citizens - as individuals and as members of society - actually want. This book develops a means of "representing" the preferences of citizens so that institutions can be studied more carefully. This is the first book to integrate the classical problem of constitutions with modern spatial theory, connecting Aristotle and Montesquieu with Arrow and Buchanan.

Review
"This is a substantially revised version of Melvin Hinich and Michael Munger's 1997 book, Analytical Politics. With new and updated discussions, as well as material not covered in the previous publication, this book will be a useful tool to teach undergraduate courses on the topic of social choice."
Carles Boix, Princeton University

"I have repeatedly assigned Hinich and Munger's volume in both undergraduate and graduate courses that introduce students to rational choice, game theory, and contemporary political thought. This new version handles spatial voting models extremely well and adds much more that wasn't covered previously. The authors' work is careful and deep, illustrating that they have gone to great lengths to add substantive content while making the book more accessible to a broader audience. This is a fantastic book."
Keith L. Dougherty, University of Georgia

Putting the Science in Political Science
By Richard M. Salsman
This pioneering work is a rigorous yet readable introduction to analytical political science – and by far the best of its type on the market. There’s pretense and posturing in the way some political science has evolved in recent decades, with ideology trumping objectivity, but that’s no part of this book, for it incorporates real science into political science.

"Choosing in Groups" has three main parts. Part I presents the basics of how decision-making occurs in groups, including how groups decide on the rules of the game (first deciding how to decide, at a constitutional level). Politics, according to the authors, is “constituted cooperative action” and “the practical process of group choice,” while “analytical politics is the study of choosing in groups.” Part I introduces the principles of valid deduction and inference, presents the essential elements of explanatory-mathematical models, addresses preference aggregation, examines moves from anarchy (state of nature) to systems of formal governance (civil society), discusses how majorities can rule without violating minority rights, and explains how utilities can be maximized consistent with the Pareto standard. Notable also in Part I are discussions of how democratic choice can yield outcomes at odds with the majority’s real preferences.

Part II is more technical, yet indispensable to the authors’ broad aim of conveying the real science of political science. The core of it entails explications, applications and extensions of spatial theory – first developed in the late 1950s by Anthony Downs and Duncan Black – which assigns electoral preferences along a continuum and shows how winning candidates and policies lay closest to the “ideal points” of electoral majorities. The section includes clear presentations and fresh insights on the Median Voter Theorem, issue salience, the prevalence of non-separable dimensions, the single-peakedness (or lack thereof) of preferences, and the stability (equilibrating) properties of majority rule.

Part III widens the analytical scope by examining “the social choice problem” more broadly-construed, first by treating Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem and discussing its implications for the legitimacy (or not) of majority rule – next by an analysis of voting and the information voters either have, don’t have, or don’t even bother to gather – and lastly, a robust examination of the dynamics of political competition, especially when voters’ preferences are uncertain.

Although "Choosing in Groups" offers value to the intelligent citizen wishing to bypass silly headlines and decode or predict deeper political trends, university professors especially will be wise (and thus appear wise, before their students) to adopt the book in introductory courses, given its comprehensive theoretical-analytical foundation. Regardless of where the serious student wishes to go next, academically – be it political theory, comparative politics, international relations, political methodology, political economy, or even the law – Choosing in Groups provides a solid grounding in the time-tested mathematical and social-scientific methods which permit political science to be both credible and powerful.
