Good but not great
By E.Temen.Ni.Guru
I purchased this with the desire for a thorough introduction to the discipline, and while it does this decently, I found the focus a bit too meandering in its flighty jumps from written language to written language. Perhaps some will prefer this way, using the languages themselves as examples; however, I must depart by thinking that a more thorough introduction would have made the examples more substantial.

Ember Island: A Novel, by Kimberley Freeman

In a compelling, complex story from the bestselling author of Wildflower Hill and Lighthouse Bay, two women separated by a century discover long-buried secrets in an Australian manor house.

In 1891, Tilly Kirkland is reeling with shock and guilt after her tempestuous marriage ends in horrific circumstances. Fleeing to the farthest place she knows, Tilly takes a job on Ember Island in Moreton Bay, Australia, where she becomes the governess to the prison superintendent’s precocious young daughter, Nell. Tilly knows she must keep the past hidden in order to start a new life, but she doesn’t know that Nell is watching her every move and writing it all down, hiding tiny journals all over their rambling manor home.

More than one hundred years later, bestselling novelist Nina Jones is struggling to complete her next book. A reporter asking questions about her great-grandmother sends Nina retreating to her family’s home on Ember Island, where she hopes to find her lost inspiration somewhere in the crumbling walls.

Though they are separated by years, both Tilly and Nina must learn that some secrets never stay buried, but what matters most is learning to trust your heart.

From Booklist
Two women, separated by more than a century, are connected by the secrets they carry with them to Ember Island. After her marriage to a deceitful opportunist is exposed as a sham, Tilly Kirkland accidently starts a fire that kills her unfaithful husband and his lover. Fleeing to a remote island off the coast of Australia, she assumes an alias and accepts a position as governess to Nell Holt, the precocious daughter of the local prison superintendent. Fast-forward more than 100 years and best-selling author Nina Jones, Nell’s great-granddaughter, takes refuge on Ember Island, nursing a broken heart and guarding an emotionally and professionally paralyzing secret. As Tilly and Nina are both drawn tentatively into new beginnings, their alternating stories are linked by their relationships with Nell. Romance, history, and a touch of windblown gothic mystery will appeal to a broad cross section of readers. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Freeman skillfully unites the stories of two women who live a century apart but both face the challenge of overcoming difficult pasts, and both under the lighthouse’s watchful presence. . . . Freeman’s moving tale gives her two heroines the unique chance to make a fresh start in life." (Publishers Weekly)

"The author’s description of the beautiful Australian coastline will linger with readers long after they finish the book." (Kirkus Reviews)

“Freeman weaves the two time periods together so seamlessly." (Booklist)

"What a perfect beach read. A sunken ship, buried treasure, a home on the beach by the lighthouse, sister relationships, adventure, and romance. Lighthouse Bay packs a lot into its two-pronged story." (atravelerslibrary.com)

"The novel's strength instead lies in Freeman's complex characters—capable of love and hate, shame and redemption. Both Beattie and Emma find themselves having to start over, and it is for these two women that readers cheer and sympathize." (Publishers Weekly)

"By the last satisfying scene, you may find yourself reluctantly parting with old friends who will live on once the cover has closed. Highly recommended." (Historical Novels Review)

"[Freeman] made her characters come to life, the scenery visible through her words, and the story was believable and made me want to read more." (Book Nook Club)

"The complexities of character and female relationships make this novel very rich and emotional." (Examiner.com)

"A gorgeous story of family and secrets and the redemptive power of love." (Kate Morton, author of The Distant Hours and The Forgotten Garden)

Needing a great story to slip into and escape for a while, I was delighted to see that Kimberley Freeman's latest, Ember Island had downloaded on my Kindle. Loving Freeman's previous books, I couldn't wait to snuggle down with this one. Cup of tea: check; cushions to rest against: check; silence and no interruptions: check. Big sigh of contentment... open book... And....
Immediately, I was transported to Ember Island, a fictional place in Brisbane's Moreton Bay, and the struggles of internationally renown but reluctant writer, Nina, who, discovering her property on the island (once owned by her grandmother) has been damaged in a storm, arrives to oversee repairs. Only, the house isn't the only thing needing fixing. Nina is nursing a wounded heart and suffering from terrible writers' block and, as the story unfolds, readers learn she is burdened from carrying a guilty secret as well.

The story shifts gear back to the late 1800s and the life of orphaned Matilda Kirkland who, after her beloved grandfather dies, follows her new husband, Jasper, to Guernsey in the Channel Islands to take up life as a wife and all that entails. Only, when Tilly (as she is known) arrives, nothing is as it seems and her dream future with the dashing Jasper soon becomes a nightmare from which she must wake or perish.

Segueing between the two stories of two very different women, the connecting thread being Nina's grandmother, Eleanor or Nell, and the diaries she has left of her childhood on Ember Island, the reader is immersed in their separate travails and quest to find both love and peace, a place to settle their restless souls, but without sacrificing their sense of self.

While Freeman segues between the narratives and times, she doesn't compromise pace or plot and the reader is allowed the time to not only get to know the characters, but to enjoy the unfolding tale as well. At first, I confess, I found Nina a bit whiny, though I did appreciate the descriptions of the crippling doubt even a famous author experiences and her inability to shake these demons. Still, I also wanted to slap her and tell her to appreciate the success she clearly has had, the supportive people in her life and to just get on with it and stop complaining! It's testimony to Freeman's prose that I responded to Nina that way; she is a realised character and certainly, the further you get into the story the more you come to appreciate why Nina feels the way she does.

Tilly is both a product of her era and someone who struggles against the shackles of imposed gender roles and male authority but without sacrificing veracity. Sometimes, however, she is too easily seduced by those who don't have her best intentions at heart; the lessons she learns from them and their actions are hard indeed. The younger characters in the book, especially precocious Nell, are endearing and wise beyond their years.

This is a romance, and while it features good men and bad, it also explores female friendship and the ties that bind and those that are severed and why. I really enjoyed the female relationships and the love and trust and betrayal that are explored within these.

Overall, this is a marvellous page-turner over which I lost sleep trying to get to the end because I simply HAD to know what happened. Though I saw a couple of the twists, there were one or two I did not, and they quite took my breath away!

Anyone looking for a great read, pick up Ember Island, slip into its pages and escape - though here's a warning: you might not want to come back!

Ember Island
By P. Woodland
I must admit to liking books with a premise like the one in Ember Island - a present heroine finding herself through the help of a past relative. It's almost time travel but only through diary reading.

Nina is an author who is suffering from writer's block and so she sets off to the titular spot to try and find a way to write again. I have to admit that Nina is a bit of a pill. Very hard to like and rather whiny. While visiting the family home she finds her grandmother's diaries which takes the reader back in time to explore the story of Tilly, a young woman born in a time when women really had no control over their lives. Tilly marries but her husband is a louse and she finds herself running away for reasons I'm not going to share and she ends up on Ember Island as a governess to young Nell, the prison warden's daughter and Nina's great grandmother. As Nina learns about Tilly through those diaries she finds that perhaps some secrets need stay buried.

This is my first book by Ms. Freeman and I did enjoy it for the most part. It did drag in parts and it was confusing at times trying to keep the three women's stories going in my head. They do all come together in the end but at times I was a touch lost. As I wrote Nina was not overly likable and Tilly was not the easiest of characters either. Nell I found the be the most developed and the one I enjoyed the most. Unlikable characters are part of life but Nina didn't seem to grow, at least to me.

I enjoyed the parts in the past more than the ones in the present - I'm not sure precisely why. Perhaps because I just enjoy historical fiction more than I enjoy current fiction.

3.5

Interesting
By Shirley McDonald
This book starts off in the 1800's and the story of a young girl called Tilly, it then goes to this century and involves a girl called Nina, an author who is visiting Ember Island and resesarching her great-great grandmother's life. The story does flow and even though it goes between life now and the life in the 1800's it wasn't disjointed. An interesting book and being set in Australia I probably enjoyed it more.

The Weapon Shops of Isher, by A. E. Van Vogt

4784 years after its founding, the Empire of Isher ruled the Solar System, and an impetuous and willful girl ruled the Empire. Into this scientific wonderland, a time-shaking bombshell was tossed, in the form of a man from 1951, victim of a conflict which was older than the Empire and which now threatened the end of both Isher and its worlds.

Here we meet such characters as Cayle Clark, who could never lose at cards; Robert Hedrock, who knew everyone's secrts; and Peter Cadron, who openly sold illegal super-weapons in public. And the Empress Innelda Isher, who could never undrestand the word "No."

"The Right to Buy Weapons is the Right to be Free"
By Patrick Shepherd
Sounds like a blurb from the NRA, but in fact this slogan is one of the lynch-pins of one of the most complicated and headlong adventures that van Vogt (often called the master of the re-complicated story) ever wrote.

The Weapon Shops, like many of his stories, was actually written and published as several stories before being collected and somewhat edited into book form. In this case, the major portions were published as "The Seesaw" (Astounding, July 1941), "The Weapon Shop" (Astounding, Dec 1942), and "The Weapon Shops of Isher (Thrilling Wonder Stories, Feb. 1949). It is important to note the age of these stories, written as they were during the so-called `Golden Age' of science fiction, when ideas were far more important than character or great prose style. This book is absolutely replete with ideas, but the prose, dialogue, and character development certainly leave something to be desired when compared to modern novels. While reading this book you need to let the story line and ideas overwhelm you, and ignore some of the more blatant excesses in writing style.

It starts with a Weapon Shop magically appearing in a 1950 neighborhood. When a policeman attempts to open its door, he finds it locked - but when a newspaperman tries it just a minute later, it opens - and the newspaperman finds himself in the Isher Empire, which has been around for 4700 years, and where the Weapon Shops effectively form the `opposition' to this government. This is plot thread number one. The second thread is that of a young man wishing to leave his provincial village and make his fortune in the big city - where he finds that he is a `callidetic giant', able to beat any game of chance, and ends up amassing a fortune so large that he can upset the economic stability of the Empire. Thread three involves the world's only immortal, Robert Hedrock, who was instrumental in establishing both the Empire and the Weapon Shops, the first to provide a stable form of government, the second to ensure that the Empire can neither stagnate nor become an unopposed dictatorship. Stir in invisibility, time travel, and the secret of faster-than-light propulsion and you have an explosive mix that will keep you turning pages as fast as you can (and don't you dare think about the plausibility of any of this!).

I think I first read this book around 1960, when I was about twelve, and many of the images of this book made a large impression on me: the casinos and their very futuristic gambling machines, the giant computer that kept track of all the vital statistics of every person in the solar system, the idea of waging war by shifting in time, the `brothels' of the day, even the `energy weapons' that the Weapon Shops sold. Reading it today, these same items still fascinate - and the ending is still an explosive bang.

The thematic point of the right to have weapons strong enough to protect the individual from any government excesses is a major one, and certainly was very topical when it was written at the height of WWII. However, this point is not examined very closely for its downside, because in the story such weapons could `sense' whether or not the person purchasing it had the appropriate mental outlook - an easy way out of the problems seen by today's society with too many weapons freely available to almost anyone.

This is possibly his strongest novel, certainly at least as good as his Slan and The World of Null-A, as here all the various ideas and plot threads do seem to come together in a cohesive whole, something that could not be said about a lot of his works. And it is a pell-mell, head-over-heels, fun and fascinating read.

Guns and Empire
By Paul Camp
There are some critics like Colin Wilson who view A.E. van Vogt as a profound philosophical science fiction writer. I suspect that rather more critics side with Damon Knight, who finds van Vogt to be a writer of almost no literary value at all. My own view is a bit more mixed. I find that many of van Vogt's novels (_The Beast_, _Rogue Ship_, _Darkness at Diamonda_) are awesomely bad. A few others (_The War Against the Rull_, _The Silkie_) are passable space operas. And then there are those that are part fairy tale, part mad inspiration, part dream sequence, and part pseudoscientific doubletalk that actually deserve their reputation: _Slan_ (1946), _The Book of Ptath_ (1947), _The World of Null A_ (1948), and _The Voyage of the Space Beagle_ (1950). For all their faults, these novels have a pizzazz and energy that transcend literary polish.

_The Weapon Shops of Isher_ (1951) belongs in this third category of van Vogt's novels. It is one of his most skillful fixup novels, based on novelettes from _Astounding_ and _Thrilling Wonder_ in the 1940s.

We are presented with a lot of the gee-whiz trappings that we come to expect of van Vogt at his best. There is an Empire ruled by a beautiful, but willful and ruthless Empress. In loyal opposition, there are the powerful Weapon Shops that bear the libertarian motto:

FINE WEAPONS
THE RIGHT TO BUY WEAPONS IS THE
RIGHT TO BE FREE (21)

There is the obligatory van Vogt superman, Robert Hedrock, who (it develops) has something to do with both the Empire and the Shops, and who has an agenda of his own. And there is McAllister, the hapless newsman, who has become a kind of human pendulum swinging through space-time:

The newsman was now the juggernaut of all juggernauts. In all the universe there had never been anything like the power that was accumulating, swing by swing, in his body. Released, the explosion would rock the fabric of space. All time would sigh to its echoes and the energy tensions that created the illusion of matter might collapse before the strain. (78)

But perhaps the real secret of the success of the novel is that much of the action is told from the point of view of three "little people": Fara, a pompous small-town shopkeeper; Cayle, his rebellious but naive son; and Lucy, a brave but impulsive agent for the Weapon Shops. Part of the fun of the novel is watching Fara learn the way of the Weapon Shops, Cayle learn the ways of the City and Mars, and Lucy fend for herself when the Shops cast her adrift. We see these characters grow and change, and their interactions with one another mature.

There are sections of mad invention:

Swiftly he held one of the rings on his finger against an ordinary looking electric socket. A loop of metal slid out. He inserted his finger into the loop and pulled. What happened in that moment was an ordinary enough weapon shop phenomenon. He was transmitted by a weapon shop matter transmitter a distance of about eleven hundred miles into one of his numerous laboratories...
He decided that he could safely remain an hour. (83-84)

And there are other sections that seem dreamlike:

Twice, involuntarily, she slowed. The first time, something soft seemed to caress her face. It was almost as if a loving hand reached out and deliberately touched her, with affectionate fingers. The second time, the result was more dramatic. She caught her breath suddenly. A flush burned her face and down her body...
It was in just such nuances that the House of Illusion excelled. Here, tired old roues... could recapture for a price otherwise lost emotions of their abused bodies. (93-94)

What, then, of the pseudoscience? In other novels, van Vogt makes use of Nexiallism, non-Aristotelianism, the Bates system of eye exercises, and Dianetics. I have suggested elsewhere that the wise reader will not take these hobbyhorses too seriously. In _The Weapons Shops of Isher_, we don't have a pseudoscience so much as we have the libertarian philosophy of the Weapon Shops. I am afraid that many younger readers will be led astray by this. They will claim that the novel is a solemn philosophical defense of the second amendment and the National Rifle Association. The truth is that a van Vogt novel-- even a good van Vogt novel-- is never a terribly rational affair. Van Vogt was always more concerned with telling a kind of creative science fiction fairy tale more than he was promoting a rational philosophy. Many times he failed in a spectacular manner. This is not one of his failures. Not by a long shot. Oh, and did I mention that the novel has what Anthony Boucher called one of the greatest curtain lines in all of science fiction?

Confusing and disjointed!
By Paul Weiss
In "The Weapon Shops of Isher", AE van Vogt deals with libertarian philosophy that is best summarized by the slogan he attributes to the weapon shops, "The right to buy weapons is the right to be free". Unlike what many potential readers might imagine, this is not a manifesto for the National Rifle Association. It's a much more soft pedalled carefully considered cautionary tale that is a warning to citizens to be sure they retain the ability to limit the potential power of any government regardless of the form it might take.

Time travel, immortality, the limitation of government power, corruption, invisibility, loyalty, naivete, love, courage, freedom, rebellion, powerful weaponry - all these themes and more are touched on in what many people call a fine example of the golden age of science fiction. But - and I'm willing to admit that perhaps the shortcoming is my own - I frankly failed to understand the charm and I didn't really catch the message. It bothers me to no end when I get to the end of a story and my sole reaction is "Huh ... what just happened?"

Certainly I understood the basic themes but I felt that van Vogt missed the mark. The story line was difficult to follow and consisted of a hodge-podge of disconnected outrageous scientific conjectures, stilted dialogue far worse than sub-title translations of Japanese B-movies, blinding plot jumps and the use of plot devices that seemed arbitrary and pointless (Hedrock's immortality and a gambler with luck that defies all imagination, for example).

In "Voyage of the Space Beagle", van Vogt wrote a series of stories that were clearly the predecessors of today's much loved Star Trek series. As a fan of classic science fiction, a lover of Star Trek in all its incarnations and a reader who has enjoyed van Vogt's other works, I wanted very much to like "The Weapon Shops of Isher". A cynical world-weary friend of mine put it well, "Vast ideas, but only half-vast execution!" Four stars for the ideas, two stars for the writing and the story to support it - call it three stars and suggest that this is a book which would be enjoyed only by hard core classic sci-fi lovers.

A Riot
By Thomas F. Ogara
It's hard to take Richard Burton seriously nowadays. His sardonic humor and his hilarious deadpan observations about Middle Eastern life sound more like a satire on Victorian attitudes than an actual travel story. And yet, underneath the veneer one sometimes catches a glimpse of sympathy and actual respect for the people he writes about.
Under the veneer, too, there is a hard core layer of reality, and a surprising number of his observations are true even today. The thing that gets me is that he was able to pull off the pilgrimage at all! As a sometime traveler and student of languages, I have been in situations where I have tried to pass for a native, and regardless of where you go it is a difficult act to pull off for more than five minutes. How Burton got all the way to Mecca without being stoned to death is beyond me.
Which makes it a good adventure story as well as good travel literature. One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. I recommend it highly.

Classic adventure... and mostly true!
By J. Burgess
I confess: Richard F Burton is one of my heroes. In part, it's because much of my life has been spent in his traces, from India, through the Middle East, to Baltimore and the Great Plains.

He's simply a fabulous story-teller. Whether he's commenting on the sexual proclivities of the people of a region, their food, clothing, culture or religious practices, he's just fascinating.

This book really should not be sold separately from the second volume; they go together. That said, this is an excellent introduction to 19th C. Arabia. It's an Arabia that exists only in the minds of traditionalists--foreign or Arab--but it informs so much of how the Arabs see themselves that it's "must reading."

Burton was in his prime when he wrote this, before his misadventures in searching for the source of the Nile. His observations are acute; his writing clear. Make no mistake, Burton was a member of Victorian English society, even if he could laugh at the barriers of class when out of the country. His insights into Arabia, though, cast a very clear reflection of his upbringing, as well as the new sense of anthropological research he adds to the process.

Its my opinion that though he wrote an amazing number of books none of them are really 5 star classics though there are some flawed masterpieces in there. He just wrote too fast to care about polishing his works.
As for racism, a charge that could be brought up against all Imperial Englishman, he is no doubt as guilty as his fellows. Not to excuse him for it but though writing within an anglo tradition and to a strictly anglo public he perhaps overstates his own anglo bias just to assure his readers he has not gone native, a charge which would be ruinous to any career, military or literary. I won't try to convince you one way or the other but any man who learns another mans language and his religion and his literature and pays so much mind to him that he can even drink a glass of water using his exact manner is paying that man and his culture some kind of compliment. I won't pretend to understand what exactly Burtons motives were from one moment to the next and one adventure to the next but his relation to all these cultures certainly cannot be reduced to a one word description. Burton is a man of immense learning , his enthusiasms are infectious and his appetites as well as his humor are outrageous. The Evolution of Man and Society, by C.D. Darlington

Here is the summation of a lifetime of research & speculation on nearly every aspect of human development by one of the world's greatest scientists. Professor Darlington's book is a revolutionary advancement of the work begun by Darwin's "The Descent of Man", and like that work, it will stand as a landmark in the history of modern thought. Darlington sees history as a continuation of the Darwinian process - an endless interplay of genetics and environment. Within this structure he ranges, with the clarity, wit and grace of a master stylist, over all of human history using recent advances in genetics as well as anthropology, archeology and sociology to achieve a radical new perspective. He shows how human heredity has shaped not only man's physical evolution but the development of his personal and social life. In Darlington's brilliant vision, breeding patterns have determined religion, war, migration, industry, kingship, the rise and fall of empires, artistic achievement, and all the other important features of social history. "The Evolution of Man and Society" is full of grave lessons, profound insights, luminous summations, startling speculations on the critical issues in human history: the conflict between materialism and idealism in American culture, the genetic basis of racial conflict, the anthropology of conquest, the evolution of aristocracy, the social function of religion, the dawn of man, the genesis of political revolution. In addition, Darlington's analysis yields literally thousands of fascinating details. The Evolution of Man and Society is an inexhaustible store of knowledge and insight, to be reread and pondered - and perhaps to change the course of modern thought. Professor C. D. Darlington is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Sherardian Professor of Botany and Regius Professor of Biology at the University of Oxford, Director of the Innes Horticultural Institution and Keeper of the botanic Gardens of the University of Oxford.

The whys, hows, and mechanics of history.
By Bruce Crabtree (bruce26@m5.sprynet.com)
C. D. Darlington looks at history from the perspective of biology and human behavior. Instead of simply declaring that thus-and-such happened, followed by such-and-thus, Darlington tells us why things happened. He describes the engines which have driven both historical individuals and civilizations to do as they have done. It's all there, from soup to nuts, in this comprehensive treatise on human civilization . . . and not in the least boring, I might add.

Survey of history with evolutionary biology basis
By Rerevisionist
The first three chapters - less than 10% of the book, and smaller than the bibliography and index - are well worth a careful read, as they summarise the whole business of types of ape and monkey -> chromosomes and other genetic links to mankind, including variations between species of these animals which hint at the way mankind evolved. Darlington mostly discusses (of course) the finer points of change, not speciation as such. This includes externally caused changes, such as sickle cell, and also changes in structures needed for speech. He examines monkey societies and the relation to oestrus. He discusses variability, and the connection with breeding strategies and such things as incest taboo and genetic distance between breeding couples. He looks at the way diseases and parasites (and carriers of parasites) were influenced by man's expansion. He looks at ecological niches - fishing, cold climates, farming, hunting - and boundaries between territories, such as mountain ranges, and the effects of climate on races. There's interesting anthropological material, much of it from India.

The great bulk of the book examines human history so far as it was known. There are omissions - China, the Mongols, the western hemisphere are rather underrepresented. Moreover, as is liable to happen with history, some of it is wrong - he has for example his map of the spread of Jews shows he had no idea about the Khazars. He is pro-Lenin for some reason. However he's good on the biological effects of (for example) celibacy in some organisations, control of fertility, insistence on inbreeding, the uses of castration, royal dynasties.

Roughly speaking, whenever Darlington generalises and makes use of many sources, he's sounder than when focussing on individuals. The first three chapters are recommended for an overview written in pre-DNA times.

The Battle of Jutland, by Geoffrey Bennett

The Battle of Jutland: At the end of May 1916, a chance encounter with Admiral Hipper's battlecruisers has enabled Beatty to lead the German Battle Fleet into the jaws of Jellicoe's greatly superior force, but darkness had allowed Admiral Scheer to extricate his ships from a potentially disastrous situation. Though inconclusive, at the Battle of Jutland the German Fleet suffered so much damage that it made no further attempt to challenge the Grand Fleet, and the British blockade remained unbroken. Captain Bennett has used sources previously unavailable to historians in his reconstruction of this controversial battle, including the papers of Vice-Admiral Harper explaining why his official record of the battle was not published until 1927, and the secret "Naval Staff Appreciation" of 1922 whose criticism were so scathing that it was never issued to the Fleet. Also included are numerous battle plans, photographs and an introduction by Bennett's son. 2006 is the 90th anniversary of the battle.

No Maps !!
By PrintsMine
Glancing through this book when it arrived, I happened upon a comment by the author that it was important to understand the positions of the ships at that certain time. This caused me to look for the expected detailed maps, necessary to understand this complex interplay of over 250 ships in the 4-fleet action.

I was (am) disgusted to discover that the publisher allowed this expensive book to be completed and sold WITHOUT A SINGLE MAP or EVEN ONE CRUDE SKETCH !!

I closed the book and returned it without reading another word.

Poor effort on Jutland
By james seeley
I checked a copy of this while in the British Library in London.
You are right about the absence of maps-- I've seen at least a dozen other books on Jutland and all have them.
The photos were also grey, small and have evidently been scanned from old books instead of coming from photo archives.
The text is rather dreary and full of mistakes.
The Pen & Sword advertising for this author says he's written many books on naval, maritime and military history. That's true, but they are all third-rate because he just copies other books, and at high speed. He is not a naval specialist, a veteran, or a research historian, but just a cheap copyist.
In his latest effort, on the WW2 ship "Tirpitz". he is passing off a collection of photos and a text which mostly don't relate to the title, leaving any readers deceived.
I'm one of several buyers and authors who has just cottoned on to this, so do have a look at the many other reviews for Mr Sutherland.
He's also written about witches, cooking, farms, fishing, airplanes, politics, leisure, business and chemistry--all in the last 3 years!

The True Fog of War.
By Amazon Customer
This book shows the true nature of military conflict, and often times this conflict is very imprecise for its combatants. The british and german fleets one would think, should have had little trouble locating each other, in spite of the poor search techniques used by both sides. Amiral Jellicoe it seems to me did not press his numerical advantage in ships. When it became apparent to Amiral Scheer and Admiral Von Hipper, that they were facing the main british fleet, and not just Admiral beatty and his battlecruiser forces, they ran for home. The germans were not able to destroy the battlecruiser component of the main fleet.Admiral Beatty used a classic ruse to lure Admiral Von Hipper and Admiral Scheer into the hands of the main fleet under Admiral Jellicoe. Nut Admiral Jellicoe failed to close the trap. Faulty intelligence certainly played a role in this misadventure. But all of the naval leaders can accept some of the blame for this naval battle and its outcome. I am very pleased with this book, would recommend it to others who have an interest in this subject. Gotta love those Watson Boys
By S. Anderson
I really enjoyed this book. It is about three brothers all of who lead totally different lives, but seem to fall head over heels for woman who are not who they typically date.

Sam is a undercover cop who during a undercover mission, spots Ariel, who he had uncontrollable thoughts about, but is off limits because his youngest brother was in love with her at one time, but Ariel never reciprocated that love and it was because she really was in love with Sam. Ariel ends up trying to help Sam in his undercover mission and gets her dress torn in the process. He takes her to his house to get her cleaned up, and one thing led to another. He tries to hide it from his btother but her car was parked in his driveway clear for him to see. And soo the story goes on...

Gil is the middle brother who finds out that he has a child with one of his friends whom he had a one night stand with. He never knew about her till his friend dies in a car crash and her best friend Anabel, who had been taking care of the little one contacts Gil. Anabel brings her to meet Gil and gives him an ultimatum. She wants him to marry her so that she can continue being the mother to his daughter. He things she is crazy, but Anabel wants him to give her a trial run.. Gil has always been attracted to Anabel, but feels she is not the "mother type".. but watching her with his daughter he sees what a great mother she is. He can't hold out and soon she is in his bed, and then into his heart.. the rest is history.

The youngest son is Pete who has a thing for his next door neighbor. She is really not his "type". She is more natural and not into makeup and all that. And Pete is not her "type" either. She is looking for a bussiness suit wearing man. But Pete can't hold out anylonger. He just has to have her, and soon realizes that he is falling hard for her, even to the point where he actually puts on a suit for her, and then they realize they really were ment for eachother.

"My House, My Rules"

Kicking off this book about the sexy Watson brothers is the oldest, Sam. He's had a crush on Ariel for a long time but has always told himself he's too old for her. His youngest brother Pete thought he was in love with her a few years back. So Ariel has always been off limits. Now in the middle of an investigation, because hot sexy Sam is a cop, she has decided she wants him and is going after him. Other than some pretty s*cky timing on her part, I just wanted to slap her around most of the time. Ariel is young, and immature, and innocent. And I don't really think she knows what she wants. She decides she wants to give her virginity to Sam but then is about to walk out the door when he asks her to strip? Good thing Sam was hot enough to make up for my lack of like of the heroine.

"Bringing Up Baby"

Such a crazy situation to be in. Gil Watson is the middle brother, the centered and stable brother. The one running the family business. The one who has his career in the right direction, has the nice big house, and everything where he wants. Except for when he finds out that he has a daughter. He has one night of passion with a work-related acquaintance in another state and apparently she got pregnant and didn't say anything. Now that she's dead he is faced with having to raise his daughter. But she comes with an extra person. Anabel was actually the one who raised the girl until now since the mom didn't really want to deal with her. And she's grown attached to the baby and will do ANYTHING to not be separated from her. Anabel is not the usual type of woman Gil has envisioned himself with. But he's wanted her ever since he met her years ago. These two actually had really good chemistry and they worked well as a couple for me. Even though her proposition was CRAZY they made it work!

"Good With His Hands"
*** 4 Feathers
This was the story I originally read that introduced me to the Watson brothers. It was cute, funny, sexy and hot. There's the girl next door, Cassidy, who's a bit of a tomboy, doesn't worry too much about how she dresses or what her hair looks like. She works with, and now lives next door to, hunky and to-die-for hot Pete Watson. They've been best friends for over a year, they have a great routine together, almost as if they're married, but it's not sexual between them. Until Pete decides that he wants it to be sexual. And of course, Cassidy had been drooling over him the whole time and torturing herself by being so close and not having him so she's all for the idea of them together. Pete was just too cute. The guy just had no clue sometimes about things and it was adorable to see him wonder how his charms might not be working on Cassidy. She's the girl with the plan of where her life is going and what kind of guy she wants to marry. And that guy is so not him. But maybe he can make the effort and be what he feels her ideal is. Or make her realize that she wants him instead as he is. Because he realizes he's been falling for her this whole time.
