The Sacramental Church: The Story of Anglo-Catholicism, by John F. Nash

What is Anglo-Catholicism? What are its origins? Are Anglo-Catholics real Anglicans/Episcopalians? What is their relationship with Roman Catholics? Has Anglo-Catholicism betrayed Anglicanism's Protestant roots? The Sacramental Church answers these and many other questions. Addressed to the general reader, it explores the history, practices, beliefs, and attitudes of Anglo-Catholicism.
While Anglo-Catholicism has deep roots in English Christianity, it attained its modern form through the nineteenth-century Catholic Revival--a movement that aroused strong passions among proponents and opponents alike. The revival, its proponents declared, reclaimed for the Anglican faith its heritage as an authentic branch of the "one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church." Anglo-Catholicism gave Anglicans/Episcopalians options to embrace ceremonial forms of worship, affirm the objective real presence and sacrificial nature of the Eucharist, venerate Mary the Mother of God, or join a monastery without abandoning their Anglican tradition.
With an extensive bibliography and numerous direct quotes, The Sacramental Church provides a valuable reference source as well as a very readable story of Anglo-Catholicism--the expression of sacramental Christianity with special relevance to the English-speaking people.

John Francis Nash, PhD, is an independent scholar and committed Anglo-Catholic. He has published numerous articles, authored the two-volume Christianity: the One, the Many (2007), and founded The Esoteric Quarterly.

The Beauty of Anglo-Catholic Worship
By John M. Linebarger
In "The Sacramental Church," John Nash provides a history of Anglo-Catholicism in England and North America, and a reflection on its distinctives. It is an admittedly partisan history, written from the perspective of someone who has embraced Anglo-Catholicism. Oddly enough, Nash's retelling of the history is not the strongest part of the book, although it is the longest part of the book. His history roots Anglo-Catholicism in the formation of the Church in England in Roman times, not in Reformation times. Some aspects of the history are gripping, such as the persecution of the Ritualists in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Other aspects seem a bit disjointed, such as when Nash abruptly shifts geographical locations in his narrative. Some aspects of the history are simply confusing, such as making a distinction between "orthodox" high-church Anglicans and the Tractarians, then never defining the distinction or what "orthodox" implied in that context. And Nash's footnotes have a tendency to pass on unrelated information rather than to provide more detail than was included in the body of the text.

But all's well that ends well, and Nash's final chapter is an absolute gem. Here he departs from the history and reflects on the distinctives of Anglo-Catholicism and its enduring attraction. Nash makes a strong case for earthly worship as a reflection of heavenly worship, and the importance of a beautiful formalism that honors and exalts the beauty of God.

Nash also has a Web site that supports the book. In short, this book is recommended, but is not to be read uncritically.

good, but needs fact-checking
By CatServant
Well-written, but there is at least one factual error in the text: Nash writes that the 1856 General Convention took place after the death of Manton Eastburn, Bishop of Massachusetts, whose extreme hostility toward ritualism at the Church of the Advent in Boston prompted one of the canons enacted at that Convention. In fact Eastburn died in 1872, sixteen years later, having been forced to tolerate the ritualists if not extend to them a warm welcome.
