OK, if you like the idea of paying another $36 for the second half of what you thought you bought in the first place.
By Grant S. Robertson
As far as information on DITA goes, this is definitely the most detailed information I have been able to find so far. But the marketing verbiage does not adequately explain what the buyer is getting, and not getting when they buy this book. So, here goes:
Chapter 1: Includes a bit of a glossary but many of the definitions are pretty vague or circular. Still better than everything else I have seen on DITA where the authors seem to assume you already know ALL the terminology.
Chapter 2: Five pages on how to configure a DITA aware editing environment (preferably Oxygen XML).
Chapter 3: A very brief overview on DITA topics and maps, interestingly saving the most definitive statement of what, exactly, a topic is till the very last sentence of that section, instead of stating that up front. Next, this chapter moves to a very detailed step-by-step tutorial of creating a rudimentary DITA "publication." Unfortunately it misses the forest for the microscopic organisms living in the bark of the trees. All the author does is tell you exactly what to type, where, and what button to click. Worse, still, the author has the reader merely edit an existing file, so we only learn about the few things he decided to tell us to change, rather than the structure around those changes. There is very little explanation (especially of how each thing fits into the big picture), as if the author hopes the reader will learn about the actual DITA requirements by osmosis. The author does offer some of his own tips for design tactics. However, with little scaffolding to hang that on, it is not very helpful to the reader.
Chapter 4: A decent overview of how to use all the open-source utility programs that are currently required to actually get anything out of all your work creating DITA documentation. It doesn't go into a whole lot of detail, but, fortunately, most of the utility programs are also used by Java Programmers so there is lots of documentation elsewhere. Of course that documentation is written by and for programmers and not technical writers, so it can be a little dense. (While this isn't the author's fault, I find it very disappointing that a system created by a big computer company, for use by technical writers, requires learning all these different, highly-technical, programming languages and utilities to actually get anything done. It is almost as if DITA was specifically designed to ensure that no one who can actually write well will ever be able to use it.)
Chapter 5: The title of Chapter 5 is "Vocabulary Composition and Specialization." Don't believe it. This chapter is full of the same vague, non-information as all the rest of the documentation I have been able to find on the internet for free. Long on DITA hype and short on specifics. Or, I should say, short on specifics which are organized in such a way as to be understandable. What you will find are several paragraphs with vary specific information which seem completely unconnected to anything else. The last five pages of this chapter consists of a very detailed explanation of how namespaces work in XML which concludes with the following sentence: "But for now, DITA cannot use namespaces for DITA-based vocabulary." Seriously? So why did the author just waste five pages of our time explaining them in such detail?
But here is the pièce de résistance: On page 190 the author writes: "The specialization facility and the design and implementation of specialized vocabulary is covered in detail in Volume 2."
SERIOUSLY?!
This is where I just stopped reading, out of frustration. I thought that was what this book, and this chapter were supposed to be about. "Specialization" is the most important feature of DITA, and the feature I have had the hardest time finding ANY specific information on.
Now, this is pure speculation, but it almost seems as if the author got hit by a bus, half-way through putting together some notes in preparation for writing this book, and then someone else came along and filled in enough fluff to make it look close enough to a finished book to be able to sell it. Either that, or the author just gave up and decided to slap what he had together into whatever the publisher would accept as a finished product and then collected his check. It's hard to tell. But this book is far from complete, or even finished. Using the excuse that there is a "Volume Two" on the way is no excuse for putting out a book that is so scattered and incomplete on almost every level.

Self-Education in DITA
By Ian E. Gorman
I borrowed a copy of this book for a week, before buying my own copy.
The book is in two roughly equal parts.
The first part of the book (End to End DITA Processing) describes how to set up a DITA working environment around OxygenXML and the Open Toolkit. This part is a tutorial interwoven with an introduction to DITA in order to provide a context for setting up and using the working environment.
The second part of the book (An Overview of the DITA Architecture) focuses on part of the DITA 1.2 Standard. The standard is huge (over 1200 ages!) and is mostly detail. The book covers and describes a substantial portion of the DITA Base Architecture (Section 2.1 of the standard), giving a solid foundation from which to explore the remainder of the Base Architecture, and to explore any other parts of the DITA 1.2 Standard that might be useful in any particular project.
Part of the attraction of this book is that it is very compact, only 340 pages. Instead providing a huge cookbook of solutions to a multitude of specific problems, the author tells you what DITA is about and how DITA works. He restricts his coverage to the fundamentals that are likely to needed in any DITA project. This gives you the foundation from which to solve problems that might not have been covered even in a huge cookbook.
New DITA workers can use this book as a good starting point to equip themselves for work with DITA.

Excellent Resource
By Patrick Quinlan
Eliot Kimber has done a great job of compiling relevant, actionable guidelines and practices in the first volume of DITA for Practitioners. I fall into the category of "those with prior DITA experience." As a self-taught DITA (and XML, for that matter) user, I found a lot here that filled in the gaps in my knowledge. While I skimmed over some of the basic info in Chapters 2 and 3, new users will find a thorough explanation of how to get up running, writing and producing output with DITA and the Open Toolkit. In later chapters, Eliot goes into how to install, run, and make basic customizations to the toolkit. Part 2 build on the foundation set in part 1, layering in complexities like specialization, compound maps, vocabularies, and more.
I don't want to sound like I'm gushing, but I do wish I'd had this book when I started out four years ago. I'm certainly glad I have it now.
