The Samaritan

Having really enjoyed, “The Killing Season,” which was the first thriller featuring Carter Blake, I was very happy to receive a copy of the sequel. Blake, as we know, is a specialist in finding people who do not want to be found and the beginning of this novel finds him locating the daughter of a wealthy man and returning her home. His job done, he wonders whether to return to the place he calls home, when his attention is drawn to a news story on the television in his hotel room. A woman has been killed in Los Angeles and other bodies have been discovered buried nearby. The method of killing reminds Blake of a man he once knew, when he was in an elite fighting unit.
Meanwhile, in LA, the killer dubbed, “The Samaritan,” is being hunted by Detective Jessica Allen and her partner, Detective Jonathan Mazzucco. The Samaritan has been given the name by the press, after it is suggested that he stops to offer help to drivers who have broken down, before abducting and killing them. As in the first novel, Blake’s offer of help is not initially warmly welcomed – although Allen is convinced once speaking to Special Agent Elaine Banner, who featured in, “The Killing Season.” However, Blake’s motives are not initially clear and Mazzucco is sceptical about why he is offering his services without payment.
This is another fast paced thriller. The novel combines flashbacks of the killer’s first crime, the investigation by Allen and Mazzucco and the story featuring Blake; including his time in the ‘Winterlong’ operation. Allen is an interesting character; intelligent and resourceful, while also something of an outsider in her department. Mazzucco is a new father and his wife is jealous of his being partnered by an attractive woman, while there are plenty of other side characters to give the novel depth. There are lots of plot twists and turns and an exciting ending in a book where the pace never lets up. An excellent second novel in what I hope will become a long running series. Lastly, I received a copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley, for review.

Carter Blake Returns To Hunt A Serial Killer

"The Samaritan" is the second Carter Blake action/thriller novel by Mason Cross, following "The Killing Season". Blake, a former black ops agent is now a loner who specializes in finding people who don't want to be found. Some are comparing Carter Blake to Jack Reacher and while there are similarities, there are also clear differences; indeed, suffice it to say that fans of Lee Child's Jack Reacher series should welcome Carter Blake to the same genre without trying to compare the two.
Carter employs "tricks of the trade", an insightful intuition, and just focused people skills to track and/or predict where elusive characters may strike next as he hopscotches around the country. Each of the first two novels in the series deal with the uncomfortable fact that Blake has no official law enforcement position or credentials so he is always a prime suspect when he offers his services and shares knowledge and ideas that local enforcement officials do not have. This may require some tinkering in further offerings of the series as it could become a formulaic and tedious start to each new book.
In "The Samaritan", Blake catches a news story of a young woman killed in California with a very distinctive method and weapon, which Blake recognizes as the signature of a former colleague, Dean Crozier. He heads to LA where he offers his services at no charge to Det. Jessica Allen and Det. Jonathan Mazzucco, both of whom are immediately suspicious--as are LAPD higher ups who don't trust Blake nor want his interference. But soon, more bodies are discovered with each bearing the same distinctive kill marks. Blake and the detectives form a tenuous alliance to pursue the serial killer who now knows Blake is on his trail--and has plans to terminate his former colleague. Soon, bodies begin piling up as Blake and Allen are not sure of who to trust, even their LAPD associates.
"The Killing Season" is a well written and executed novel with credible dialogue and believable characters. I enjoy the Carter Blake character and believe he has great promise to develop a wide following of fans of the action/thriller suspense genre. A significant similarity to the Jack Reacher series, are philosophical conflicts that inevitably arise spotlighting the bureaucratic "by the book" form of justice and the "no holds barred" form of street justice--often highlighting how modern rules of engagement and judicial restraints leave some criminals "untouchable" until a loner who doesn't play by all the rules appears to exact justice of a different kind. And it is often engrossing how Blake uses his unique intellectual and instinctual talents to keep a step ahead of the villains. Although I preferred "The Killing Season", I greatly enjoyed this novel and I can recommend it and the planned series to fans of action thrillers.

Entertaining series for those liking thrillers.....

Mason Cross channels Michael Connelly in this follow-up to his 2015 thriller, The Killing Season.
Although not as thorough as Connelly's Harry Bosch Las Angeles-based mysteries, this particular story,too, takes place in the City of Angels as "Carter Blake" (a man with multiple names) goes across country to seek out a former fellow black ops soldier who seems to be traveling across country leaving a trail of unexplained killings in his wake. Using LA as background for this particular story, Cross reintroduces us to Blake and his skill of tracking down people who don't want to be found. Cross' hero actually tends to take a somewhat secondary role, much as he did in his debut in "The Killing Season" -- leaving much of the details and events to another strongly portrayed female named Jess Allen. Much like FBI Agent Elaine Banner in Cross' first book, Allen has to overcome male bias and tradition in her field and is portrayed as a no-nonsense, highly-skilled officer.
I read both of the author's books in a matter of days simply because his topic and presentation was engaging and well-prepared. I don't find his lead character to be nearly on the level of a Bosch or a Jack Reacher (as suggested on the book's cover), but still see him as an evolving and interesting lead. I would have preferred to ending to be a bit more pronounced and aggressive, but I still enjoyed the book and its presentation. If you are into the Michael Connelly, Robert Crais-type book, I think you will like this series.
