About the Author
John R. Schlapobersky is a Training Analyst, Supervisor and Teacher at the Institute of Group Analysis, London and Research Fellow, Birkbeck, University of London. He is in private practice at the Bloomsbury Psychotherapy Practice and works with individuals, couples and groups. He has trained generations of group analysts, teaches internationally and has many publications. This book is the professional life’s work of a leading British group analyst.

A beautifully written book

A thoughtful, beautifully written work about the value of group therapy and how a skillful group analyst--trained in Foulkesian group analysis--thinks about the various therapeutic elements of group. While a layperson might find the details of some chapters to be too much information, the book provides a framework for group therapists (or therapists interested in leading groups) that appeals to both the intellect and the heart. I was especially intrigued by the chapters that delineate some of the differences between the Foulkesian analytic model and the north American model of interpersonal group therapy. And the clinical scenarios throughout speak to the more emotionally engaging moments in a therapy group--these carefully crafted scenarios reminded me of difficult moments in my own groups and helped me find words for a process that so often seems to defy language itself. Ultimately, this book has inspired me to take more risks as a group leader and to appreciate more fully the healing power of group, even when I don't have the words to understand the process as it unfolds.
