Semantics is divided into three parts: the first establishes the place of semantics within linguistics and its relationship to other disciplines. The second introduces key topics in the description of word and sentence meaning. The final part reviews the three main current theoretical approaches to semantics: componential theory, formal semantics, and cognitive semantics. Each chapter contains exercises that familiarize the student with the practice of semantic description.
The second edition of this classic work is a complete revision that updates and extends the discussion of theories, and is a vital resource for students of semantics.
About the Author
John I. Saeed is Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Centre for Language and Communication Studies, Trinity College, University of Dublin. He is the author of several books, including Somali Reference Grammar (second edition, 1993) and Somali (1999).

Accessible and easy to read

This book is a great intro book to semantics. It has clear examples and explanations. Definitely recommended for beginners or anyone interested in semantics!

Kindle version coments

The Kindle version of this book lacks page numbers, which makes following it difficult for classroom use when the professor says "on page....". Also in chapter three there is a note regarding the formatting: "Here we follow the convention of writing postulated semantic elements in small capitals to distinguish them from real words." However, in the text, I checked the Kindle version against a classmate's paper version & found that the Kindle version does not have the small caps in the text, making it difficult to make this distinction. Nonetheless, I think it will still be usable - I will update if I find myself needing to return it for a paper version.
